Despite the recent debut of an incredibly powerful Hulk in *Marvel Zombies*, fans are still hoping to see the definitive version of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bruce Banner, first portrayed by Edward Norton in *The Incredible Hulk*, has been a key figure in the MCU since its beginning. He’s been a vital part of the Avengers and established as a brilliant scientist and one of the strongest heroes, but over time, his power level seems to have diminished.
Lately, we’ve seen a lot of new characters with Hulk-like powers, while the original Hulk, Bruce Banner, has sometimes been seen as less powerful. The show *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law* introduced Jennifer Walters as She-Hulk, turned Todd Phelps into HulkKing, and further developed the story of Emil Blonsky’s Abomination. The movie *Captain America: Brave New World* also changed Thaddeus Ross into the Red Hulk. And while the animated series *What If…?* has shown us several powerful Hulks, the *Marvel Zombies* series just introduced what might be the strongest Hulk yet.
Marvel Zombies Just Introduced a New Version of the Hulk
The series *Marvel Zombies* builds upon the zombie-filled alternate reality introduced in the 2021 episode “What If… Zombies?” from season 1 of *What If…?*. In this timeline, Bruce Banner came back to Earth in 2018 to alert the Avengers about Thanos, only to discover the planet had been overrun by a Quantum Virus that turned millions – including many heroes – into zombies. Banner teamed up with the remaining heroes to search for the Mind Stone, and appeared to sacrifice himself. However, *Marvel Zombies* shows that wasn’t the end of his story.
Following a battle with a zombie Thanos, T’Challa destroyed the Infinity Stones in Wakanda. Shortly after, Bruce Banner took on their power, becoming the incredibly powerful Infinity Hulk. This new form was unlike anything we’d seen before – it wasn’t quite Banner, and it wasn’t quite the Hulk as we knew him. The Infinity Hulk easily defeated the zombie army led by the Queen of the Dead, but despite being an exciting reveal, many fans weren’t looking for this particular transformation for the character.
We Still Want the REAL Hulk to Return to the MCU After a Decade
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve loved seeing all the different Hulk variations popping up lately! But honestly, I really miss the classic Hulk – the one who was just pure, raw power. It feels like ages since we’ve seen that side of him! I’m thinking back to *Avengers: Age of Ultron* in 2015, when he went toe-to-toe with Iron Man in Johannesburg and completely wrecked things in Sokovia. Since then, he’s become smarter with *Thor: Ragnarok* and then basically merged with Bruce Banner in *Avengers: Endgame* to become the Smart Hulk, which is cool, but it’s just not the same as seeing the original, untamed beast.
Let’s be honest, the Hulk was at his most exciting in those early Marvel movies. I’m talking about *The Incredible Hulk*, *The Avengers*, and *Age of Ultron* – those were the days when you never knew *what* the Hulk was going to do, and his raw power was just incredible. It’s honestly a little shocking it’s been almost ten years since we’ve seen that truly savage, unpredictable version of the character. But thankfully, it looks like Marvel might finally be realizing that was a mistake and bringing him back to his roots.
2026 Might Be the Year the True Hulk Returns to the MCU
Okay, so *The Hollywood Reporter* dropped a bomb yesterday – August 1st, 2025, to be exact – Mark Ruffalo is coming back as Hulk in the new *Spider-Man* movie, *Brand New Day*! It’s been a while since we’ve seen Bruce Banner – last time was in *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law* – and everyone’s buzzing that this could mean we’re finally getting the classic, angry Hulk back. Now, it’s just a rumor for now, Marvel hasn’t said anything official, but honestly, that’s the Hulk I’ve been missing! He’s been way more interesting in animated form lately, so seeing that raw power and aggression brought to life again would be amazing.
The Hulk has lost some of his power in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and fans are eager to see him regain his strength and become a major player again. Mark Ruffalo is set to reprise his role in *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, which might lead to appearances in *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*. However, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Hulk in the MCU.
