One of the Decade’s Best Horror Movies Gets a Promising Sequel Update 5 Years Later

It’s difficult for any movie to get noticed with so many new releases, and a studio that succeeds in making one stand out will almost always try to build on that success. One common way to do this is with a sequel, especially when fans are actively asking for one. Despite strong fan demand and studio interest, one particularly successful horror film hasn’t gotten a follow-up-until now. After 5 years, there’s some good news about the possibility of a sequel.

I was so thrilled by Universal’s The Invisible Man when it came out in 2020 – it really was a fantastic film, especially considering it was released just before everything shut down because of the pandemic! I recently read an interview with ScreenRant where star Elizabeth Moss explained what’s been holding up a sequel. Apparently, it’s still in development, which is great news! It’s just taking some time, but they’re still working on it, and I’m really hoping we get to see it happen.

A Quality Sequel

I recently caught up with Michelle Moss and, naturally, I had to ask about a potential sequel. She admitted she didn’t have much to share, saying, “I wish I did,” but quickly added that the team is still actively pursuing one. What’s interesting is she explained the studios are really dedicated to delivering a follow-up that lives up to the incredibly high standard of the first film. According to Moss, it’s that commitment to quality, and not a lack of interest, that’s mostly what’s causing the delay. They don’t want to rush anything and risk disappointing fans, and I can certainly appreciate that.

As a film fan, it’s always interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes stuff. Apparently, this movie came out just two weeks before everything shut down with COVID, and it still raked in hundreds of millions of dollars. The director, Moss, said they easily could have just made a quick sequel and released it directly on streaming, and honestly, he thinks some people would have profited from that. It’s a shame, really, because you wonder what could have been if things had gone differently. He basically said they could have taken the easy route, but it’s good to know they at least considered other options. It’s a fascinating lookinto the business side of filmmaking.

I’m really thankful to Universal and Blum for choosing not to do that and for maintaining a high standard, which is rare in situations like this – they truly wanted to make something worthwhile. It’s not typical, but it’s important to me. We all adore that movie, and those who created it – we’re incredibly proud of their work,” Moss stated.

Moss explained they’re being careful about making a sequel. “We want to be certain it’s worthwhile and lives up to-or even exceeds-the original,” he said. “That’s why it’s taking time, but I don’t see that as a negative. If we move forward, it has to be done well. We definitely still want to create another installment and are actively developing it. It’s just a matter of finding the perfect script.”

An Unexpected Hit

Even though it came out just before the pandemic began, The Invisible Man was very successful for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. It earned $144 million in theaters before its release was stopped due to the pandemic. The film was also well-received by both critics and viewers, currently holding a 92% rating from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was really excited when I learned this film connected to Universal’s broader horror world – they called it the Dark Universe. It officially kicked off with The Mummy in 2017, and I was thrilled to see The Invisible Man as the second film in that shared world. What really got me hyped was the incredible cast they announced – Tom Cruise, Javier Bardem, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe, and even Johnny Depp! They had plans for so many classic monster reboots, like The Bride of Frankenstein and a new take on Dr. Henry Jekyll, it seemed like a really ambitious project.

It’s a shame that The Mummy didn’t quite connect with audiences the way Universal wanted, and it meant Johnny Depp wasn’t involved in The Invisible Man as originally intended. Thankfully, The Invisible Man *did* end up being a success and getting great reviews, but by then, the whole Dark Universe idea was already losing steam, and eventually, Universal put the project on hold. I’m really hoping The Invisible Man gets another chance, and it sounds like there are a lot of people working to make that happen, which is fantastic!
