New Star Wars Release Set Between Episodes 8 & 9 Makes Leia Rey’s Jedi Master

Throughout the recent Star Wars sequels, Rey receives guidance from each of the original trilogy’s heroes. Han Solo helps her at the beginning of her journey in *The Force Awakens*, and later she trains with Luke Skywalker in *The Last Jedi*. Following Luke’s death, Leia Organa takes on the role of mentor in *The Rise of Skywalker*. However, due to Carrie Fisher’s passing, Rey and Leia didn’t have much time on screen together. Now, Lucasfilm plans to explore their relationship further in a new novel coming out next summer.

During a panel at New York Comic Con, Lucasfilm Publishing revealed that a new book, Star Wars: Legacy, will be released on July 28, 2026. Written by Madeleine Roux, the story continues shortly after the events of The Last Jedi, focusing on Rey and Leia’s joint mission to fix the damaged Skywalker lightsaber. The novel will also explore the complex emotions Rey and Leia grapple with regarding Kylo Ren, especially after his descent further into the dark side during the Battle of Crait. Here’s a preview of the official book description, from the Star Wars website:

Rey and the Resistance are trying to recover after their narrow escape from the First Order on Crait, but it’s a difficult time. While her friends desperately need her guidance as the last Jedi, Rey feels isolated and burdened. The Jedi rely on a teacher-apprentice relationship, and with Luke Skywalker gone, Rey is lost. Leia Organa attempts to train Rey in the Force, just as Luke once trained her, but her knowledge isn’t complete. Adding to their challenges, Rey’s lightsaber is damaged, and both she and Leia are troubled by Kylo Ren and past mistakes. Leia wonders if she can effectively guide Rey when she’s grappling with her own doubts.

Star Wars: Legacy Has a Connection to The Mandalorian

The upcoming Star Wars: Legacy story will largely unfold on the planet Tython, a world with a Jedi temple that could help Rey fix her lightsaber. Tython was previously seen in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, where Din Djarin and Grogu searched for any remaining Jedi – leading Luke Skywalker to eventually find them. Years after Grogu used the temple’s seeing stone, Rey and Leia will delve deeper into the temple, facing challenging trials to uncover its secrets. During their exploration, they’ll also encounter a group of refugees fleeing the First Order.

Tython is a planet deeply connected to the Force, making it an ideal location for the story of *Legacy*. As Rey and Leia explore the Force together, the ancient temple on Tython could offer valuable insights, strengthening both their understanding of the Force and their bond with each other. It will be fascinating to see what draws the First Order to this planet. Given that *Legacy* focuses on the inner lives of Leia, Rey, and Kylo Ren, it’s possible Kylo is interested in the temple, hoping its secrets could help the First Order achieve victory.

You don’t need to read the Star Wars books to understand the movies, but the *Legacy* series could be a great addition to the official story. It promises to explain important parts of the sequel trilogy that were left unexplored. While Rey had plenty of screen time with Han and Luke, *The Rise of Skywalker* didn’t fully show her connection with Leia. The filmmakers used old footage of Carrie Fisher and scenes from *The Force Awakens* to include Leia, but *Legacy* has the chance to really flesh out that relationship and give viewers a deeper understanding of their interactions in the film.

A compelling part of the story will likely be watching Leia grow as a teacher. While *The Rise of Skywalker* showed she briefly trained as a Jedi, she ultimately left that path. Now, she’s unexpectedly tasked with guiding a new generation, despite not having all the answers herself. Throughout the *Star Wars* films, Leia was known for her courage and strong leadership, but she never became a Jedi Master like her brother. This new role in *Legacy* could be challenging for her, and it will be fascinating to see how she adapts and succeeds.
