Even before the release of *Mortal Kombat II*, fans have something to look forward to! At New York Comic-Con 2025, it was announced that *Mortal Kombat 3* is officially in development. Plus, Jeremy Slater, who wrote the script for *MK2* (and also worked on *Godzilla x Kong* and *Coyote vs. Acme*), will be returning to write the third film.
During the New York Comic Con panel, Slater announced that the success of *Mortal Kombat II* has given Warner Bros. and New Line confidence to continue building the *Mortal Kombat* universe with more projects.
Christian Slater shared that New Line and Warner Bros. are very pleased with the film and believe there’s a large audience eager to see more. Because of this, they’ve already asked him to begin working on a sequel to ‘Mortal Kombat’.
The Studio Is Betting On Big Success With Mortal Kombat II
Jeremy Slater’s comments seem accurate, considering the recent decisions made by New Line and Warner Bros. Originally, *Mortal Kombat II* was planned for release this fall – just weeks from now, in fact. However, the studios have delayed the film’s release to May 15, 2026, a key date for big summer blockbusters. This suggests the studio has confidence in the sequel, created by Slater, director Simon McQuoid (of the first *Mortal Kombat* film), and the entire production team. It also implies they may be increasing their investment in the film – potentially with more money for visual effects, marketing, and merchandise – to ensure it reaches blockbuster status. While the first *Mortal Kombat* had a $55 million budget, details about the sequel’s budget are scarce, but it’s likely to be even higher.
Despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic – when Warner Bros. simultaneously released all its 2021 films on streaming and in theaters – the first *Mortal Kombat* movie still earned a solid $84.4 million at the box office. This is particularly impressive because fans had the option to watch it at home. If the upcoming *Mortal Kombat II* draws both dedicated fans *and* a broader audience who enjoy action movies, quickly moving forward with *Mortal Kombat III* would be a smart way to ensure the franchise continues to succeed.
Mortal Kombat II is slated to hit theaters on May 15, 2026.
