Don’t get your hopes up, up, up for a live action KPop Demon Hunters remake.
Even though the Netflix animated musical has been a huge hit, its creator, Maggie Kang, has said she doesn’t want to turn the made-up K-pop group HUNTR/X into a real-life band.
She explained in a recent BBC interview that the show’s humor and style lend themselves perfectly to animation. She believes bringing these characters to life in a live-action format wouldn’t feel right, as it would make the story too realistic and wouldn’t work for her vision.
Similarly, Chris Appelhans, her co-director, admitted he was initially unsure about moving into live-action filmmaking.
He explained that the best part of animation is its ability to go beyond what’s normally achievable. He also noted that previous attempts to adapt anime into other formats have often felt somewhat stiff and unnatural.
Although the filmmakers intend to continue the series with animation, Maggie expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of telling more stories within the film’s world.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear her say there’s definitely potential for more stories with these characters and in this world! She hinted that if they do continue the story, it won’t just be *any* sequel – it’ll be one that’s truly worth telling, and something the fans – like me! – will genuinely love.
Since debuting in June, *KPop Demon Hunters* has become Netflix’s most popular original series ever. It’s therefore expected that the show’s stars—EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami—are interested in making a second season.
In September, Audrey told *TopMob News* they were also awaiting the call, and EJAE simply said to keep an eye out for updates.
And in the meantime, the trio are still wrapping their heads around their newfound fame.
“We’re still trying to make sense of everything,” Rei said. “It’s been overwhelming – each day brings a new achievement, a new high. We’re incredibly thankful, but it’s difficult to fully grasp what’s happening.”

Arden Cho plays Rumi, the talented lead singer of the KPop group HUNTR/X. Rumi is a strong and capable fighter who battles both supernatural demons and her personal struggles.
Born in Texas to Korean parents, Arden Cho has been steadily working as an actress, singer, and model since 2008. She’s appeared in shows like *Teen Wolf*, *Partner Track*, *Chicago Med*, and the Netflix live-action adaptation of *Avatar: The Last Airbender*.
Beyond her professional life, she’s a skilled athlete – a competitive poker player who even participated in the 2018 World Series of Poker, and a trained martial artist with a black belt in taekwondo.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m always fascinated by the talented people behind our favorite characters! Let me tell you about the voice of Mira, the ramyeon-loving demon hunter – it’s the incredible May Hong! She’s not only an actress, but a successful model too, having graced runways and campaigns for major designers like Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Adidas. And fun fact? She grew up right here in Queens, New York!
Hong described her character as incredibly strong, but also deeply sensitive and easily hurt. She added that she personally relates to portraying someone who appears tough externally but is actually very caring with those closest to her.
Ji-young Yoo is quickly becoming a well-known actress, and she plays the cheerful character Zoey in the series HUNTR/X. Before landing a role in the Prime Video show *Expats* with Nicole Kidman, she was a student at the University of Southern California. She’s also recently appeared in *Freaky Tales* and *Until Dawn*.
As someone who spends a lot of time bringing characters to life, I’ve learned energy is *everything*. With Zoey, she’s just naturally bursting with it – which is adorable, honestly! But it definitely takes a toll. I really had to focus on building up my own energy levels before recording sessions, so I could match her vibrant personality and deliver that same enthusiasm in her voice.
Many of the movie’s key characters have both voice actors and singers bringing them to life. With four of HUNTR/X’s songs hitting the Billboard Hot 100, the trio clearly delivers some incredibly popular and memorable vocals.
The character Rumi’s vocals are performed by EJAE, a talented singer, songwriter, and producer. She’s known for her work with popular K-pop groups like Red Velvet, Twice, Aespa, and NMIXX. After the film’s directors heard her demos, including the hit songs “Golden” and “Your Idol” (which she co-wrote), they specifically requested EJAE to be the singing voice for Rumi.
Audrey Nuna, a singer and rapper, is the voice behind the character Mira. Originally from New Jersey, she signed with Arista Records in 2019 and gained popularity with her songs “Damn Right” and “Comic Sans,” which features Jack Harlow.
Rei Ami is the vocalist and rapper for the group HUNTR/X, performing as Zoey. Originally from South Korea, she moved to Maryland with her family at the age of six. She’s gained significant recognition, notably with her song “Freak” featuring Sub Urban, which has garnered over 298 million views on YouTube.
Ken Jeong plays Bobby, the dedicated and encouraging manager at HUNTR/X. Before becoming an actor, Jeong was a doctor, and he first gained widespread recognition for his roles in *The Hangover* and *Community*. He’s also currently a judge on Fox’s *The Masked Singer*.
Ahn Hyo-seop voices Jinu, the captivating lead singer of the Saja Boys, in the new show *KPop Demon Hunters*. While this is his first voice acting project, he’s well-known for his roles in popular K-dramas like *Dr. Romantic*, *Business Proposal*, and *A Time Called You*.
Jinu’s vocals are provided by singer and composer Andrew Choi. He gained recognition as a contestant on the show *K-pop Star* season two, and has since worked as a producer for popular K-pop groups like Monsta X, EXO, and SHINee.
Celine, who used to be a K-pop star and now hunts demons while protecting Rumi, is portrayed by two actors.
Yunjin Kim is the voice actor for the character Celine. She’s widely recognized for her role as Sun on the TV show *Lost*, and has also appeared in *XO, Kitty* and *Mistresses*.
Celine’s singing is performed by Lea Salonga, a famous singer from the Philippines. She’s well-known for creating the role of Kim in the Broadway musical *Miss Saigon*, and she also provided the voices for Princess Jasmine in Disney’s *Aladdin* and the main character in *Mulan*.
Daniel Dae Kim plays Healer Han, a unique doctor who steps in to help Rumi when she can no longer speak. Kim is a familiar face on television, having appeared in popular shows like *Lost*, *Hawaii Five-0*, *Angel*, *The Good Doctor*, and *Butterfly*.
Lee Byung-hun, the South Korean actor famous for roles in shows like *Squid Game* and movies like *The Magnificent Seven*, provides the voice for the villainous demon king, Gwi-ma.
Maggie Kang, who wrote and co-directed the movie, makes a funny appearance as a flight attendant. She’s shown watering plants with coffee, and later revealed to be a demon by Rumi and her team.
Born in Seoul, Kang immigrated to Toronto with her family at the age of five. She’s a storyboard artist who has contributed to films such as *Puss in Boots*, *Kung Fu Panda 3*, and *Trolls*.
Liza Koshy, known for her YouTube videos and acting, appears as a TV host, interviewing the band HUNTR/X about their latest song, “Golden”.
Koshy first became popular on the video-sharing app Vine in 2013, and she’s built a large following on social media ever since. In 2019, *Time* magazine recognized her as one of the 25 most influential people online. Recently, she’s appeared in the movie *The Naked Gun* and lent her voice to both *Transformers: Rise of the Beasts* and the Disney Channel series *Hamster & Gretel*.
Joel Kim Booster, an actor and comedian, provides the voices for multiple characters in the film, including Romance Saja, the host of both the variety and idol shows. He’s well-known for his stand-up routines and for writing and starring in the 2022 movie *Fire Island*. He’s also appeared in popular TV shows like *Shrill*, *Big Mouth*, *Loot*, and *Industry*.
SungWon Cho, a voice actor who plays the character Abby (also known as the Saja Boy and famous for his impressive abs), is well-known for his work in video games, television, and movies. He also has a successful YouTube channel called ProZD.
Although Baby Saja doesn’t speak in *KPop Demon Hunters*, his catchy rap parts in the songs “Soda Pop” and “Your Idol” are performed by Danny Chung. Chung is a rapper and songwriter who contributed to the movie’s soundtrack by co-writing “How It’s Done” and “Soda Pop.” He’s also written songs for the popular group Blackpink.
