DC’s Swamp Thing Movie Gets Encouraging Update From James Gunn (but When Will It Happen?)

In early 2023, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, announced the first slate of DC Universe films, including a *Swamp Thing* movie. Originally planned as a dark, Gothic horror film inspired by stories like *Frankenstein* and directed by James Mangold (known for *Logan*), the project hasn’t seen much progress recently. Mangold has since signed a deal with Paramount to produce and direct new films there, leading DC fans to worry *Swamp Thing* might be canceled. However, James Gunn has now confirmed the project is still moving forward.

In an interview with *Rolling Stone*, James Gunn stated that the *Swamp Thing* project is still moving forward despite James Mangold’s new agreement with Paramount. Gunn confirmed they’ve spoken with Mangold and he remains involved. He added that development takes time, and they’ll see how things progress.

When Could Swamp Thing Be Released?

As much as I’m excited about a potential *Swamp Thing* movie, it sounds like James Mangold isn’t focusing on it right now. It seems his next project is *High Side*, a crime drama with Timothée Chalamet, and Paramount really wants to get that one made – they won a bidding war for it, so they’re eager to move forward. Mangold has also hinted that Paramount is interested in some other ideas he has, which could unfortunately mean *Swamp Thing* gets delayed even further if those projects take off.

As a big DC fan, I’m hearing some interesting news about the future of DC movies! It sounds like DC Studios is really focusing on making fewer, but higher-quality films – they’re aiming for only one or two theatrical releases each year. Apparently, we’re getting four movies over the next two years: *Supergirl* and *Clayface* are coming in 2026, and then *Man of Tomorrow* and *The Batman Part II* in 2027. Just to clarify, *The Batman Part II* is still a DC Studios project, even though it’s not directly part of the new DCU. That probably means *Swamp Thing* won’t arrive until at least 2028. They’ve got other projects in the works too, like a new Wonder Woman movie and *The Brave and the Bold*, another Batman film. But as of right now, nothing’s been officially scheduled after *The Batman Part II* comes out in October 2027.

The timing of *Swamp Thing*’s production largely hinges on finishing the script. James Gunn has repeatedly emphasized that DC Studios won’t start filming any project until he approves the final script. Fortunately, there’s no pressure to hit a specific release date for *Swamp Thing*. Gunn recognizes that plans often evolve during development and is willing to adjust the DC Universe roadmap accordingly. While *Swamp Thing* sounds promising, taking the necessary time to get everything right is the priority.

James Mangold is working on multiple projects, not just the DCU’s *Swamp Thing*. His *Star Wars* movie, *Dawn of the Jedi*, was announced in 2023 but hasn’t progressed much either. Since his deal with Paramount didn’t cancel *Swamp Thing*, it’s likely *Dawn of the Jedi* is still in development. Mangold is currently very busy, so fans probably won’t see *Swamp Thing* until the late 2020s or even the 2030s—especially if *Dawn of the Jedi* moves forward quickly.
