10 Animated Lilo & Stitch Stories Perfect for a Live-Action Sequel

The second installment of the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” could draw from various tales previously established within the animated series. This upcoming movie serves as a sequel to the 2025 release, which was itself a live-action reinterpretation of Disney’s 2002 hit animation by the same name and has already earned over $950 million globally with an initial budget of $100 million.

In June, it was officially confirmed that there will be a second installment of Lilo & Stitch. However, details about its plot are still under wraps. All we know so far is that hints from the 2025 movie suggest that characters like Angel and Leroy may exist in the live-action universe. Also, director Dean Fleischer Camp has dropped some intriguing hints in interviews that the original villain, Captain Gantu, could make a comeback in this sequel.

If the upcoming live-action sequel decides to draw from existing stories within the franchise, it will have a wealth of options to pick from. For example, they might opt to adapt one of the three sequels to the original movie which were released on TV or directly to video.

It might as well extend an episode from Lilo & Stitch: The Series, a spinoff show, where the characters pursue and capture other experiments designed by the scientist Jumba, prior to creating Stitch (experiment 626).

1. Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005)

Lilo & Stitch’s First Chronological Sequel

The story for the film “Lilo & Stitch 2” that seems most likely to draw from in the Lilo & Stitch franchise is the sequel called “Stitch Has a Glitch,” which was released directly on video in 2005. Despite being the third movie produced, it actually occurs chronologically between the original 2002 film and 2003’s “Stitch! The Movie.

As a dedicated cinephile, I can confidently say that the upcoming sequel boasts an engaging, substantial plotline ripe for live-action adaptation with box-office potential. The story revolves around me, finding myself in a thrilling high-stakes situation as my beloved character, Stitch, starts to malfunction. This predicament compels Lilo and her family to embark on a time-sensitive quest to discover a cure for him before the problem escalates to the point where he might not survive.

The film does not include Gantu’s character, suggesting that “Stitch Has a Glitch” might not have been the intended sequel for the live-action remake by Fleischer Camp initially. Regardless, any continuation of the live-action movie would likely involve a rearrangement or alteration of the characters in some manner.

In my view as a film critic, the 2025 iteration of Lilo & Stitch deviated significantly from its predecessors by transforming Jumba from a morally ambiguous ally to an outright antagonist. Given this shift, it’s reasonable to anticipate that either his presence will be minimal or he might assume a more sinister role in the upcoming live-action sequel.

2. Stitch! The Movie (2003)

The First Feature Produced After Lilo & Stitch

As a supporter, I would advocate for adapting “Lilo & Stitch 2” by considering “Stitch! The Movie” from 2003. This film not only marked the first direct-to-video sequel but also served as a precursor to the animated series, acting as a ‘backdoor pilot’. By utilizing this approach, we could establish a robust foundation for future sequels, introducing more characters and storylines, thereby expanding the franchise’s universe.

To put it simply, the plot of the movie needs a major change because it features Gantu, a character we haven’t met yet, trying to kidnap Jumba, who isn’t part of Lilo’s family in the live-action version, in order to learn about his past 625 experiments.

In my opinion, transforming “Stitch! The Movie” into a loose adaptation could pave the way for an exciting sequel by introducing the other experiments hinted at in the 2025 remake.

3. “Yin-Yang” (2003)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 1, Episode 9

While it might seem unusual for a film like Lilo & Stitch 2 to base itself solely on an episode from the TV series without initially establishing the main storyline, it is conceivable. The initial act of such a movie could potentially serve as a condensed version of the events depicted in Stitch! The Movie, given that the short animated episodes would need to be expanded for the big screen anyway.

In a live-action sequel, they could choose to focus on one or more experiments as the main narrative, such as Yin and Yang for example. These experiments were central in an episode of season 1 where Lilo and Stitch had a disagreement and went their separate ways to pursue different experiments.

In the upcoming sequel, it would be quite impactful to tell a compelling emotional tale where the characters are forced apart and must find ways to resolve their differences. This could be symbolically depicted through two experiments, each possessing the power to potentially devastate our planet if they unite, thereby creating a narrative with significant suspense and high-stakes drama.

4. “Amnesio” (2003)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 1, Episode 12

In this episode, we witness a situation triggered by an experiment leading to amnesia. As a result, Lilo forgets her past and believes she’s a police officer pursuing Stitch. This twist could inject some excitement into “Lilo & Stitch 2”, allowing us to delve deeper into their characters and introduce comedic elements.

5. “627” (2003)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 1, Episode 19

In this episode, Jumba could instead be portrayed as the villain instead of a father figure trying to punish Stitch. Furthermore, the main focus of the experiment in this episode, number 627, was previously hinted at in the end of the 2025’s movie “Lilo & Stitch”. Experiment 627 is a stronger version of Stitch who has often served as an adversary and could offer a compelling conflict for any potential sequel.

6. “The Asteroid” (2003)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 1, Episode 20

This first-season episode is similar to a blockbuster movie in terms of action and tension, with an asteroid threatening Earth. Yet, it also resonates emotionally as Lilo and Stitch discover the asteroid is inhabited by an alien, implying that one habitat will inevitably be lost, creating a poignant dilemma for both parties involved.

7. “Angel” (2004)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 1, Episode 30

In this season 1 episode, which was produced near the end, there’s a strong chance it will be adapted due to the introduction of Stitch’s love interest, Angel or experiment 624. Given Angel’s prominent role in the franchise, it appears that the producers might strive to incorporate her into the storyline as soon as feasible.

Furthermore, this move would enable the franchise to promptly expand upon the hint dropped in the 2025 film, where an image of Angel emerged as Jumba scanned through his list of experiments.

8. “Swapper” (2004)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 2, Episode 3

Similar to the character “Amnesio,” this episode has the potential to be developed into a movie filled with laugh-out-loud antics. The main experiment allows for body swapping, resulting in Stitch attempting to throw a successful party while inhabiting Lilo’s body. Given the recent resurgence of body-swap stories, as evidenced by the upcoming “Freaky Friday,” this could be an excellent opportunity to capitalize on that trend.

9. “Skip” (2005)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 2, Episode 6

In the universe of “Lilo & Stitch,” an episode named “Skip” carries significant impacts. This adventure finds Lilo employing a device to jump ahead in time by ten years with each leap. Beyond exploring profound themes about childhood and maturity, it offers a captivating narrative as Lilo’s and Stitch’s absence during their time-traveling journey allows experiments to seize control of the world.

In this episode, we delve deep into the storyline of our recurring antagonist, Dr. Hämsterviel. Though he’s yet to make an appearance in live-action format, there are two possibilities for his introduction: either he’ll be introduced at the start of the movie or, alternatively, character Jumba could take over his role in a potential feature-length adaptation.

10. “Wishy-Washy” (2005)

Lilo & Stitch: The Series Season 2, Episode 16

In this latest episode titled “Wishy-Washy,” Lilo unintentionally causes turmoil by employing the magical experiment, as she yearns for her older sister Nani and David to be married, due to her lack of parents, whom she could take a photo with for hula school.

It seems that this plot idea could perfectly suit a sequel to “Lilo & Stitch 2” as the live-action adaptation has already given prominence to the emotional hardships faced by Lilo and Nani after losing their parents, making it a fitting continuation of their story.
