The District of Columbia boasts some captivating and unforgettable figures from the realm of fiction. While Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are undoubtedly popular, DC Comics is also home to a host of lesser-known characters that are equally deserving of attention. One such character is Amethyst, the Princess of Gemworld, whose potential has not been fully realized by DC Comics. It’s a missed opportunity on their part not to feature her more prominently in their stories.
Amethyst is one of DC’s most underdeveloped characters, having starred in several remarkable series throughout her existence. Regrettably, her last solo run ended in 2021, and the one before that concluded in 1987. It’s high time for Amethyst to claim the spotlight once more, and I aim to persuade you to join me in advocating for this.
Amy Winston Is the Princess of Gemworld
In the enchanted, medieval land of Faerieland, populated by mystical beings and a group of humans gifted with magic known as Homo Magi, reside. These people harness their power from earthly gemstones, and the realm is governed by twelve houses, each symbolized by distinct birthstones. House Amethyst was once the most powerful but faced turmoil when the malevolent Dark Opal attacked their castle, killing the royal family. The protective sorceress Citrina then secreted Princess Amethyst to our world, where she was brought up by ordinary human parents and named Amy Winston.
Growing up, Amy believed she was much like any ordinary girl, but her life took an extraordinary turn on her thirteenth birthday when Dark Opal’s troops tried to eradicate her. Against all odds, she persevered and discovered her unique lineage. Upon returning to her native land, she pledged to harness her magical abilities to overthrow the malevolent ruler and liberate her people. True to her word, she succeeded in restoring freedom and prosperity to her kingdom as well as Gemworld. However, this wasn’t the end of Amy’s heroic journey. As Amethyst, she would become involved in numerous events within the expansive DC Universe, often related to magic. Interestingly, Gemworld was initially ruled by the Lords of Chaos and is linked to other magical realms like Sorcerer’s World, where all magic originates.
Regarding Princess Amethyst, her youthful years belie an incredible power that once placed her among the mightiest magical entities across the multiverse. Before the New 52 overhaul, she was a Lord of Order, associating with esteemed mages such as Doctor Fate and John Constantine. In a remarkable showdown with the Spectre, although the exact outcome remains uncertain, she either held him at bay or managed to repel him sufficiently to escape, both feats being monumental. Serving on both Young Justice and Justice League Dark teams, she has consistently demonstrated herself as a hero worth watching closely. Yet, unfortunately, DC seems to underutilize her potential.
Amethyst Deserves More
In essence, Amethyst stands out as a captivating and distinctive character, ruling over a realm imbued with original magic. Her unique magical system adds depth to world-building and showcases remarkable power, qualities that are hallmarks of memorable characters. Comparable figures in DC comics, such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Zatanna, embody more mature, fully-realized adults, occasionally representing abstract concepts. Amethyst offers a fresh perspective on the magical aspects of DC, presenting the viewpoint of a young girl, which is seldom explored in DC comics. The only other youthful character in this mold is Billy Batson, but Amethyst serves as an alternative for young readers, particularly girls. It’s essential to have more female and young characters in comic books, and Amethyst, with her self-led stories and significant role within the universe, meets that need.
It’s fascinating how underutilized the character Amethyst is, considering her immense potential. With just three short volumes in her collection, she has already achieved so much. Expanding on her story and the lore of Gemworld, where she originates, would be a tremendous opportunity for DC Comics to offer a distinctively unique experience. As a medieval, magical, incredibly powerful princess, Amethyst is a character that everyone can rally behind.
