With “Superman” set to hit theaters soon, James Gunn has even bigger plans for the Man of Steel within the DC Universe. After a long absence from the big screen, the upcoming “Superman” movie starring David Corenswet will reintroduce this iconic DC character as part of Gunn’s expanding DCU franchise.
Discussing the ongoing projects under DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters,” there is growing anticipation about Superman’s appearance beyond 2025. Although the upcoming Superman movie marks his official debut, it’s just the start for Corenswet’s version of the Man of Steel.
In a recent chat with Omelete, Gunn hinted that Corenswet’s upcoming projects with DC Studios, as mentioned by Gunn himself who is one of the co-CEOs, could potentially involve Superman. Here’s what he subtly suggested:
James Gunn was inquiring about the project I was engaged with, understanding that I have a task underway and that he is involved in some capacity, yet unaware of the specific details since he knows absolutely nothing about it.
Upcoming for Gunn is the second season of the project he worked on as both writer and director, titled “Peacemaker“. This series is set to debut on HBO Max on August 21. There are speculations that Corenswet’s Superman character might make a brief appearance in “Peacemaker” season 2, but this has not been officially verified as of now.
What James Gunn’s Superman Update Means For The DCU

In terms of a sequel for “Superman 2”, director James Gunn has mentioned that his current project isn’t a direct follow-up to the original story, although it might feature Superman’s last son, Kal-El. However, actor Ozark Mitchell II (Corenswet) may not yet know the exact nature of this project, suggesting it could be a production where Superman plays a significant role but isn’t necessarily the main character.
An important point to consider is that DC Studios may not keep fans waiting for a prolonged period before introducing Corenswet as Superman in the DC Universe. Intriguingly, it’s speculated that Corenswet’s Superman could be part of the secret project within the DCU which Gunn has been hinting at, as he previously stated, “The thing I am most excited about hasn’t even been revealed yet.
It’s uncertain if we’ll hear about that announcement in 2025 following the launch of “Superman”. However, it’s thrilling to know that Gunn and DC Studios are eager to keep Superman in play, rather than leaving him out of the DCU until his next appearance.
Our Take On James Gunn’s Superman Update
It remains to be seen when Gunn will reveal the title of the project featuring Corenswet as Superman, but it’s exciting to speculate about how the DC Universe might incorporate this iconic DC character throughout its films. After a prolonged absence from the big screen, apart from Henry Cavill’s brief appearance in Black Adam in 2022, the DCU seems poised for an impressive return of Superman.
It’s quite likely that we might see Corenswet as Superman ahead of schedule, given the success his movie might achieve. However, prior to catching him elsewhere, fans can watch him as Superman from July 11 onwards.
