October is the perfect time for a scary movie! As the nights get longer and Halloween approaches, cooler weather creates the ideal spooky atmosphere. Classic horror films like The Conjuring, The Ring, and A Nightmare on Elm Street are all available to stream this month, and Netflix has one particularly terrifying movie that’s not for the faint of heart.
If you’re a Netflix subscriber looking for a truly frightening movie, check out Host. This 2020 horror film, which is still available to stream, has earned high praise (98% on Rotten Tomatoes!). It’s a unique and scary experience set during the pandemic, taking place entirely on a Zoom call. The story follows a group of friends holding a virtual séance that goes horribly wrong when they unknowingly invite a dangerous demonic force into their homes.
Host Is One of the Scariest Movies, According to Science
Whether you’ve seen the many reaction videos online, read that critics call Host a delightfully scary movie for horror fans, or seen it hailed as the scariest movie ever, you might still wonder if it truly lives up to the hype. Now, science backs it up: a recent experiment showed Host is the second scariest movie ever made, only surpassed by Sinister.
The Science of Scare Project conducted a study to measure how scary different movies are by tracking the heart rates of 250 people. The movie Host received a “Scare Score” of 95, making it one of only four films to score above 90. Surprisingly, it was even found to be scarier than popular horror films like Insidious, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Paranormal Activity.
Despite being less than an hour long, the movie Host is remarkably effective at building tension and delivering plenty of scares. It cleverly blends everyday experiences and fears with classic horror elements, creating a truly unpredictable and thrilling watch. One viewer described it as terrifying, saying it “scared the s out of me” and almost made them stop watching after just twenty minutes, praising the film’s excellent jump scares.

Netflix has added a bunch of scary movies just in time for Halloween! Along with the already popular film Host, subscribers can now stream titles like Death Becomes Her, Sinister 2, The Strangers, When a Stranger Calls, Night of the Living Dead, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and the 2025 version of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
