Typically, when a TV show finishes, that’s it – the story is over, and it lives on through old episodes or streaming. Occasionally, shows are rebooted years later or continued in some way. But sometimes, a follow-up series actually happens, and one Disney vampire show’s revival is proving incredibly popular with viewers just five years after the original ended.
The new Disney+ series Vampirina: Teenage Vampire launched on October 15th and is already proving popular, currently ranking at number 6 in the platform’s top 10. It originally premiered on the Disney Channel on September 12th. The show follows 13-year-old Vampirina “Vee” Hauntley, a singing vampire who moves from Transylvania to attend a boarding school for the performing arts. The cast includes Kenzi Richardson, Jiwon Lee, Shaun Dixon, Milo Maharlika, and Faith Hedley.
Vampirina: Teenage Vampire Ties Back to a Popular Disney Junior Animated Hit
What makes Vampirina: Teenage Vampire unique is where it started. The show is a continuation of Vampirina, an earlier animated series that first aired on Disney Junior and Disney Channel in 2017. That original show followed young Vee Hauntley as she adjusts to life in Pennsylvania after moving from Transylvania with her family. They opened a bed and breakfast called the Scare B&B for monsters, and the series focused on the Hauntleys learning to live like normal people – the “Pennsylvania way” – while Vee tried to keep her monster identity a secret from her new friends. The show boasted a talented voice cast, including Lauren Graham (from Gilmore Girls) and James Van Der Beek (from Dawson’s Creek) as Vee’s parents, and Wanda Sykes as Gregorina, a 473-year-old gargoyle who lived with the family.
The show Vampirina was inspired by Anne Mari Pace’s Vampirina Ballerina book series and was popular with young children, earning positive reviews. After three seasons – the last of which aired from October 2020 to 2021 – the show ended naturally, it wasn’t cancelled. Now, in 2024, Disney Channel is creating a live-action version of Vampirina, following Vee as a high school student. This is unusual because it allows fans who grew up with the original animated series to continue watching as the character matures alongside them. Since the cartoon ended five years ago, many of its original viewers are now in middle school, making teen Vee’s experiences even more relatable.

One reason Vampirina: Teenage Vampire is so popular, even for those unfamiliar with the original cartoon, is that it gives Vee fresh problems to solve while staying true to what people loved about the first series. Like before, Vee still needs to keep her vampire side a secret. But now, she also has to avoid the attention of vampire hunters, and one of her classmates is secretly a vampire hunter too!
By showing Vee growing up—as much as a vampire can—and facing challenges that resonate with today’s viewers, Vampirina: Teenage Vampire has successfully reimagined a popular character. The show’s recent popularity on streaming platforms proves it’s connecting with a new generation.
