A popular fan theory about how The Boys will end has been disproven by the show Gen V. The Boys is heading into its final season, promising a huge showdown between the superheroes (led by Homelander) and a growing resistance group (led by Starlighter and A-Train). Fans have been speculating about who will ultimately defeat Homelander, with many guesses including his son Ryan, Butcher, or even Black Noir. However, a surprising reveal in Season 2 of Gen V has ruled out one particularly bold theory about the series’ conclusion. (Beware: Spoilers ahead for Gen V Season 2!)
The spin-off show previously revealed that Thomas Godolkin, the founder of God U, was still alive and had his own ambitions for supe supremacy. Rumors circulated that he could even control Homelander with his powerful mind control abilities. This led many to believe he’d be a major villain in Season 5, either working with or against Homelander, and potentially trying to take over Vought and the country with Sister Sage. However, those plans were definitively ended in the finale of Gen V Season 2, when Marie Moreau used her powers to kill Godolkin in a brutal fashion, reminiscent of Victoria Neuman’s methods.
It’s Good Thomas Godolkin Won’t Be The Boys Season 5’s Villain
The introduction of the Godolkin twist was a strong point for Gen V, creating a formidable new enemy that took a team of Supes to overcome. Considering his history with Vought and his role in creating Compound V, it would make sense for him to be the ultimate villain in The Boys – bringing the story full circle since he was instrumental in starting everything. However, it would feel illogical to introduce another major villain in The Boys after spending so much time establishing Homelander as the primary and biggest threat.
Godolkin/Cipher worked well as a villain in Gen V because his origins are tied to that show, but he doesn’t have much history with the characters in The Boys. Since not everyone who watches The Boys also watches Gen V, making him the main villain for Season 5 would feel unfair to longtime fans, even if his powers would make him a credible threat.
This is an area where The Boys universe needs to tread carefully. The season finale of Gen V brings several characters – Marie, Emma, Cate, Sam, and Annabeth – together with Starlight and A-Train to fight Homelander, which is a positive development. However, the show needs to strike a balance between these new storylines and continue to prioritize the characters we’ve been following and invested in.
The show Gen V established that Marie shares a similar origin to Homelander – both were the sole survivors of Vought’s Project Odessa, and she’s been developed to be equally powerful. This sparked speculation that she might be the one to defeat Homelander in Season 5, especially after she killed Godolkin. However, that would be a misstep. While Marie is a compelling and strong character, it wouldn’t align with her narrative or the spirit of The Boys – just as Godolkin’s death felt narratively appropriate.
There are several interesting possibilities for who could defeat Homelander – including the ones I discussed earlier – and good reasons to support each one. However, the story should focus on The Boys itself, rather than the spin-off Gen V, to be most effective.
You can watch seasons one through four of The Boys and seasons one and two of Gen V on Prime Video. The fifth season of The Boys is currently planned to come out in 2026.
