1 Stranger Things Character Will Be More Important Than Ever in Season 5 (& It’s Not Who You’d Expect)

Fans might be surprised by which character takes the lead in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. The Duffer Brothers’ hit Netflix series will conclude its story in three parts, releasing on November 26th, December 25th, and December 31st, bringing an end to the groundbreaking sci-fi show that has been in development for nine years. Stranger Things has followed the residents of a small town in the 1980s as they’ve uncovered mysteries involving a hidden laboratory, a different dimension, and terrifying creatures, and all of these storylines will come to a climax in the final season.

The main cast of Stranger Things will all be back for the fifth and final season, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Joe Keery. Jamie Campbell Bower will also return as Vecna, the show’s main villain who was revealed in season 4. While Vecna previously focused on characters like Max and Eleven, he’s expected to set his sights on a surprising new target in season 5.

Holly Wheeler May Be More Important in Stranger Things Season 5

While reporting a cover story for Time about the final season of Stranger Things, Elina Dockterman visited the set and saw a scene that seemed like a hallucination. It featured Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher), Nancy and Mike’s younger sister, wandering through a strange, orange rock maze. She was wearing a 1950s-style blue dress, similar to something from Alice in Wonderland, and had blood on her forehead. This suggests Holly will play a significant role in the show’s fifth and final season.

According to Dockterman, Hilary Leavitt from the Duffer brothers’ Upside Down Pictures shared that a recent scene ties into the new Stranger Things stage play, The First Shadow. This play is a prequel that delves deeper into Vecna’s history as Henry Creel, revealing that a blood transfusion from him gave Eleven and the other Hawkins Lab children their powers. It appears Holly Wheeler’s role in Stranger Things season 5 will be linked to this prequel, and will also draw inspiration from themes found in Alice in Wonderland, as noted by @officialhannahsarah.

In a recent article for Time, Dockterman points out that Holly’s old-fashioned clothes are a significant detail. She also notes an Alice in Wonderland picture in a room she visited, which is the bedroom of Henry Creel’s sister, Alice. This is interesting because Alice wore a blue dress in season 4 of Stranger Things, much like the one Holly will wear in a future hallucination. With rumors that episode 2 of season 5 will be called “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler,” it seems likely that Holly will play a key role in the show’s final season.

What Could Vecna Want With Holly Wheeler in Stranger Things Season 5?

It’s still unclear what Vecna’s plans are for Holly Wheeler in the fifth season of Stranger Things, but he definitely seems to be targeting her. After the fourth season, a popular theory suggested that Karen Wheeler might actually be the adult version of Alice Creel, who hadn’t truly died in 1959. This would have made Holly Vecna’s niece, but the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow has now proven that Alice and Karen are separate people.

There might be a hidden connection between Holly Wheeler and Alice Creel. Both characters have ties to people affected by the Upside Down (formerly known as Dimension X), suggesting they could be experiencing consequences of being near it, even if they haven’t been there themselves. After playing a smaller role in the first four seasons of Stranger Things, it would be exciting to see Holly Wheeler take center stage in season 5, though her importance to the final story is still unknown.
