Early video games often left much to the imagination. Limited technology meant stories weren’t fully explained and features had to be simplified. This sparked countless fan theories as players tried to fill in the gaps and understand the biggest mysteries. While most of these theories were just wishful thinking, some have surprisingly been confirmed by the game developers themselves, sometimes years later. Interestingly, with updated versions of games, developers have even incorporated these confirmed fan theories into the official storyline.
Here are three wild fan theories that turned out to be true.
3) The Mario Characters Are All Actors

In most Super Mario Bros. games, Mario and Bowser are constantly battling. It’s a familiar story: Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, and Mario has to rescue her by defeating him. But after Mario saves the day, things take a strange turn. In the world of Mario, these two rivals often set aside their feud and end up doing something unexpected, like playing baseball.
It’s always been a little odd seeing Mario characters, who are often rivals, team up for sports and parties. However, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has explained this design choice. He compared the Mario series to Popeye, where characters frequently switch roles depending on the specific adventure.
Miyamoto shared that he sees Nintendo’s characters as versatile, capable of playing different roles depending on the game. He described them as a ‘family’ or ‘troupe of actors,’ suggesting they aren’t limited to one personality. This shows Nintendo views its characters as flexible and adaptable, willing to change their behavior to suit the needs of each game.
2) The Location of Mary’s Body in Silent Hill 2

Shortly after the release of Silent Hill 2 in 2001, fans began to speculate that James’s deceased wife, Mary, was secretly in the car with him on his drive to Silent Hill. This idea aligned with the game’s story and the “In Water” ending, but remained an unconfirmed fan theory for many years.
In 2012, Masahiro Ito, the lead designer of Silent Hill 2, used Twitter to back up a fan theory. He stated that, as he recalls, Mary’s body was found in the backseat of James’s car, not in the truck.
Fans already had a strong feeling about this, but it was officially confirmed in the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2. The game clearly shows a body-shaped object covered with a blanket in the backseat of James’s car. While you can’t see Mary, the cover was probably included to avoid spoiling the ending for players new to the series. Regardless, a developer confirmed this theory, and the remake made it official.
1) Chrono Trigger Had an 8th Playable Character

Chrono Trigger is considered one of the best role-playing games ever made, but it ended with some mysteries still unsolved. While some answers came in Chrono Cross, many fans believe the original Chrono Trigger was intended to feature an eighth playable character who would have clarified those remaining questions.
A Japanese guide for Chrono Trigger revealed that the game was originally planned to include an eighth playable character, Gaspar the Sage. While there’s a mention of him potentially joining the party in the final game, it appears this idea was removed early in development.
The strategy guide for Chrono Trigger featured artwork by Akira Toriyama, the game’s character designer. Combined with a line of dialogue found in the game, this confirmed that Gaspar was originally intended to be an eighth playable character. However, he was removed from the game very early in development, meaning he doesn’t have any unique graphics within the game’s code. Players would never have known about him without the information in the strategy guide.
