Despite initial criticism of its $80 price tag, Mario Kart World has quickly become a success, selling 9.57 million copies. Nintendo also reported that Donkey Kong Bananza, released on July 17th, has sold 3.49 million units, according to their latest financial report for the quarter ending September 30th.
Nintendo Switch 2 games have sold a total of 20.62 million units. However, the discussion around the price of Mario Kart World is a bit complex. The sales figures include bundles that cost $499.99 and are only available for a limited time this fall. Considering the console itself costs $449.99, the game effectively costs only $50 when purchased as part of a bundle.
Although the number of games sold is high, the total revenue is probably not as much as you might expect. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling well—even with the new Mario Kart World available—and has almost reached 70 million units sold. This shows Nintendo is focused on long-term success, so a few million units sold at a lower price isn’t a big concern.
I just finished reading the review for Mario Kart World, and it really breaks down everything the game gets right and wrong. I also checked out their take on Donkey Kong Bananza – seriously, that game is a strong contender for Game of the Year, in my opinion, and the review explains why!
