Mortal Kombat 2 Star Teases Multiple Fatalities: “Some Are Going To Be Really P*ssed Off” (Exclusive)

The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie successfully brought the popular video game franchise back to life on the big screen, giving fans the violent action and accurate characters they’d been wanting for years. The upcoming sequel aims to build on that success by finally including the iconic Mortal Kombat tournament that was missing from the first film. This time, Earthrealm’s champions – including new addition Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) – will officially compete in the high-stakes tournament to protect their world from the invading forces of Outworld, led by the ruthless Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). The movie will feature a much larger cast of characters, including fan favorites like Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), and Quan Chi (Damon Herriman). However, viewers should be prepared for some of their beloved fighters not making it to the end.

Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young, hinted that viewers should be prepared for major character deaths in the upcoming movie. He explained that early versions of the script had different characters dying, but the filmmakers ultimately decided that anyone could be at risk. “Nobody is safe,” Tan said. While he acknowledged that some fans won’t be happy with who dies, he also pointed out that death isn’t necessarily permanent in the story. He warned viewers that there are a lot of fatalities, but urged them not to be too upset about it.

Cole Young Has One of the Best Fights In Mortal Kombat II

The first Mortal Kombat movie introduced Cole Young, an MMA fighter with a connection to the iconic Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada). Cole discovers hidden abilities that help him defend Earthrealm. He acted as a guide for audiences entering the world of Mortal Kombat‘s warriors and prophecies, and will be back for the sequel. Though Johnny Cage will join the cast, producer E. Bennett Walsh confirms Cole will be central to one of the sequel’s biggest and most intense action scenes.

I filmed a really incredible fight scene for Mortal Kombat II, but I can’t reveal who my opponent is just yet—knowing who it is will explain why it’s so memorable. The fight takes place in one of my favorite video game settings, and I was thrilled we were able to film there because it’s such a fantastic location. It took around three weeks to shoot, which is a long time for a single scene. The fight style is unlike anything else in the movie, and you’ll see some new moves and special abilities that weren’t in the first film. Remember that at the end of the first movie, Cole was just starting to understand his powers? This fight really showcases how those powers have developed. It’s a fight that fans have been eagerly anticipating, and we definitely put a lot of effort into it—it took over three weeks to complete!

The fights in the new installment are incredibly brutal, and Tan promises a truly intense and realistic experience. He believes it’s among the most violent and hard-hitting fights they’ve ever created, ranking it in the top three. This dedication to more elaborate and intense fight scenes, set in familiar locations from the game, shows the sequel is committed to giving fans the adaptation they’ve been hoping for.

Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 8, 2026.
