Sebastian Stan Hints At Moving On From Marvel: “It Was Only Step One For Me”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought many popular comic book characters to life in movies and TV shows since 2008. With so many new actors joining the universe recently, it looks like a beloved character might be leaving soon.

In a recent interview on the Stronger Podcast, the actor discussed his future with Marvel Studios and how much longer he plans to play the role of Bucky Barnes. He explained that he wants to bring something new to the character, saying, “I have to try to offer something different than before.”

Stan explained that he’s always valued all of his roles equally. He especially feels that his work in the Marvel universe helped him develop both personally and as an actor, teaching him a lot about building relationships. He also mentioned how important it was to work alongside actors he admired, like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson.

Stan explained that his involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt like both a job and a community, offering him a sense of connection and stability. However, he emphasized that his work in the MCU was just the beginning of his career. He most recently appeared in the Thunderbolts movie.

Stan first became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011, playing the character Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. Since then, he’s appeared in all three Captain America movies, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He’s also made brief appearances in Black Panther and Captain America: Brave New World.

Marvel Studios unexpectedly announced the cast of Avengers: Doomsday during a live stream on March 26, 2025, revealing Stan as one of the stars. Filming officially finished on September 19, 2025.

Whether Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes in Avengers: Secret Wars is still uncertain, since filming hasn’t started yet. However, with Secret Wars planned as a major reset for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after The Multiverse Saga, 2027 might be the last time we see many of the original actors in their iconic roles.
