The Funniest Comedy of the 1990s Returns to Streaming (But on a Different Service This Time)

These days, it’s rare to see a lot of comedy movies in theaters, but the 1990s were a fantastic time for the genre. That decade produced a string of clever, original, and hugely popular comedies, like Groundhog Day, The Big Lebowski, and Clueless. While those days are over, many of these classic films are now available to watch at home, and one particularly funny ‘90s comedy is back on a streaming service.

Good news for fans of Wayne’s World! The 1992 comedy, originally a sketch from Saturday Night Live, is now streaming on Paramount+ after a brief absence from Netflix. It joined the platform on November 1st, along with its 1993 sequel, Wayne’s World 2. The film stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne and Garth, two metalhead friends who host a local public-access TV show from Wayne’s basement. The movie became a huge success, earning over $183 million globally, and also features Tia Carrere, Rob Lowe, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Brian Doyle-Murray in its cast.

Wayne’s World Is a Laugh-Out-Loud Good Time

Even if you’re a longtime fan, Wayne’s World is still hilarious. This comedy classic, released in 1992, consistently makes audiences laugh with its many references to 80s and 90s pop culture and its unique style of humor. Wayne and Garth frequently break the fourth wall by speaking directly to the camera, and the movie is full of unforgettable lines like “We’re not worthy!” and “If you’re gonna spew, spew into this.” The film’s humor comes from its clever, self-aware style and the charmingly silly personalities of Wayne and Garth.

Beyond being funny, the movie really embodies the feeling of the 1990s. Released as grunge and alternative rock were becoming hugely popular, Wayne’s World perfectly reflected this change by mixing a love for 70s rock with the new music of the time. The film’s central idea – Wayne and Garth’s public access TV show – also mirrored the rise of independent media at the time.

Even now, Wayne’s World is still a much-loved movie that has truly stood the test of time. It has a 79% rating from critics and an impressive 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel also did well, earning a 58% critic score and a 63% audience rating on the site.

What’s New on Paramount+?

Paramount+ significantly expanded its movie selection on November 1st, adding a wide variety of titles. Subscribers can now enjoy films like 21 Jump Street, Blades of Glory, Catch Me If You Can, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The service also added most of the films from the Bridget Jones, Indiana Jones, and Tomb Raider series.
