Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the new Doctor Who spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea‘! Following the recent announcement of its release this year on BBC One and iPlayer, the premiere date has now been revealed – and it’s just weeks away.
The new five-episode series will premiere on Sunday, December 7th, 2025, so fans can now save the date! The premiere will actually include two episodes back-to-back.
Russell T Davies, who leads the creative team and writes the show, said they’re thrilled to release it during peak TV season, and all five episodes will also be available as a complete set for viewers to enjoy over the Christmas holidays.
Doctor Who usually airs on Saturdays, but it’s not uncommon for the show and its related series to appear on Sundays as well. During Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Doctor, episodes were shown on Sundays, and the first season of the spin-off, Torchwood, followed the same schedule.
People outside the UK will need to wait until 2026 to watch the series. This will also be the last season released under Disney’s current agreement to help make and share Doctor Who.

Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Jemma Redgrave will lead the cast of ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ a new installment featuring UNIT battling the Sea Devils.
The new five-episode series centers on Barclay, a regular employee at UNIT, whose life is turned upside down when an ancient species appears from the ocean. When the enigmatic Salt emerges during a summit on the Thames, Barclay unexpectedly becomes humanity’s representative. As humanity faces potential disaster, UNIT, under the leadership of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, struggles to maintain control.
The cast also includes Alexander Devrient, Ruth Madeley, and Colin McFarlane, who is reprising his role as Austin Pierce for the first time since the Torchwood: Children of Earth series, though he has appeared in Doctor Who in a different capacity since then.
Fans will have to wait about a year for more Doctor Who after ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ airs. The show will return with a Christmas special in 2026, and it’s expected to resolve the major cliffhanger ending where Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor seemed to transform back into Billie Piper’s character.
Doctor Who is coming back for another season, but it’s still unclear how the show will be funded and made. It’s also not yet known if the BBC will team up with another company to help produce it.
Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
