If you’re a fan of horror, From is easily one of the best shows on television right now. This series, available on MGM+, presents a complex and unpredictable mystery. It centers around a secluded town that traps anyone who comes near, and its residents must find ways to survive, all while a terrifying presence lurks in the nearby woods. The show is compelling because it blends supernatural scares with a focus on the characters and their struggles – the danger comes not only from the force trapping them, but also from the conflicts within the town itself.
The show From has been renewed for a fourth season, but viewers will have to wait until 2026 to see it. While production is happening now, the release isn’t expected for a while. If you’re looking for something similar to watch in the meantime, here are seven recommendations, including one excellent mystery series.
7) Wayward Pines
Similar to the show From, Wayward Pines centers around a town where residents are forbidden from leaving or contacting the outside world. While the basic idea is comparable, Wayward Pines quickly takes a different turn. The series follows Ethan Burke, who arrives in the Idaho town to investigate missing Secret Service agents, only to discover he’s trapped – as is everyone else. Despite an outwardly peaceful appearance, anyone who tries to escape faces severe consequences, and a larger, more complex mystery is unfolding beneath the surface.
The TV series Wayward Pines, which is based on novels by Black Crouch, featured a cast including Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino, Melissa Leo, Djimon Hounsou, and Hope Davis. It ran for two seasons on the Fox network.
6) Les Revenants (The Returned)
As a big fan of atmospheric mysteries, I recently checked out the French series Les Revenants (available on AppleTV+), and it’s seriously good. It’s not about a town holding people captive, but it’s definitely got a supernatural vibe. The story unfolds in this quiet mountain town in France, and things get weird when people who’ve been dead for years just… come back. They’re alive, seemingly healthy, and they just wander home, acting like nothing ever happened. It’s like they have no memory of being gone, and they’re trying to pick up where they left off. It’s a really unsettling and compelling premise.
What sets Les Revenants apart is that it’s more than just a story about people returning from the dead. The series features eerie supernatural events, and the reasons behind the returns are never completely clear. It’s a deliberately paced show full of unexpected turns, leaving you with many unanswered questions – and none of the possible explanations are comforting.
5) 1899
Even though Netflix canceled it after just one season – much to the disappointment of fans – 1899 is a fantastic show. It’s perfect for anyone waiting for the next season of From, but it stands on its own as a truly great series. The story follows a group of European immigrants traveling to New York by ship, hoping for a fresh start. Their voyage takes a strange turn when they encounter another ship, previously lost at sea. What begins as a seemingly simple historical drama quickly becomes a complex and unsettling mystery.
Even though the show was cancelled after only one season and leaves you with a major cliffhanger, that single season is a truly unique and compelling story. It’s complex enough that you might want to watch it more than once to fully understand everything, making it well worth your time.
4) The Rain
Post-apocalyptic stories can feel overdone, but the Danish series The Rain offers a unique twist. Instead of the usual zombies or nuclear fallout, it’s the rain itself that causes the end of the world. A virus in the rainfall wipes out most of the population in Scandinavia, and two siblings, Simone and Rasmus, hide in a bunker for safety. Six years later, they venture out to find their father, the scientist who left them there, only to discover a dramatically altered world.
Although it’s not as twisty as From, this series offers a really fresh perspective on a world after the apocalypse, making it a surprisingly enjoyable watch. The major plot reveals are genuinely surprising and ultimately very rewarding.
3) Dark
If you enjoyed 1899, you’ll likely love Dark, another thrilling sci-fi series from the same creators. This German show, which ran for three seasons, is a uniquely complex and original take on time travel. It centers around four families in a small town as they investigate a child’s disappearance, ultimately uncovering a time travel conspiracy that spans generations.
Dark is a thought-provoking series that explores complicated ideas about time, what makes us human, and whether we truly have free will. It frequently uses time-loop paradoxes, adding to the intricate plot. Overall, it’s a captivating and well-crafted show, and stands out as one of the best TV series of the past few years.
2) Lost
I think Lost deserves to be on this list for a couple of reasons. First, Harold Perrineau, who you might know from From, is also a fantastic part of the Lost cast. But more importantly, if you’re craving a show packed with twists, mysteries, and a touch of conspiracy that keeps you guessing, Lost is honestly the gold standard. It’s just that good at keeping you on the edge of your seat!
The show Lost centers around the passengers who survive a plane crash on a strange, deserted island. As they try to survive, they face numerous unexplained dangers and unravel a web of secrets. Lost was incredibly popular when it first aired and is famous for its controversial series finale. With six full seasons available, it’s a great show to watch while you wait for From to return.
1) The Leftovers
Created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers is a remarkably well-crafted mystery. The show takes place three years after a strange event called the “Sudden Departure,” where 2% of the world’s population vanished. It focuses on the lives of those left behind as they try to rebuild and cope with the aftermath, including the rise of new cults and unusual ways of dealing with their grief.
Spanning three seasons and various locations, The Leftovers is a deeply moving show that examines grief, both individual and worldwide. It also delves into themes of trauma, the search for meaning, and the role of faith. While complex, the series is exceptionally well-made, and many consider its final season to be almost flawless.
