Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s death lingers with her fans.
It’s been three decades since the singer’s tragic death at just 23 years old. She was killed by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of her fan club, in an incident officially ruled as first-degree murder. However, Saldívar maintains the shooting was unintentional.
Because so many people were deeply affected by Selena’s death, an autopsy was quickly performed just three hours after she passed away. It confirmed she died from a gunshot wound to her lower right shoulder.
According to the original 1995 report obtained by Us Weekly, Coroner Lloyd White determined that Selena Quintanilla Pérez, age 23, died from severe bleeding caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.
According to reports, the bullet entered Selena’s back and traveled through her ribs and upper lung before going through her chest and exiting her body.
According to the coroner’s report, the bullet’s trajectory critically damaged a major artery under her collarbone, which led to her death.
Although she claimed innocence, Saldívar was found guilty of first-degree murder in October 1995 and received a life sentence, with a chance of being released on parole. She was denied parole in March 2025 and won’t be eligible to apply again until 2030.
Decades after her tragic death, the life of Selena is being remembered in the new Netflix documentary, Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, which is available to stream now. The film was made possible with the help of both Selena’s husband, Chris Pérez, and her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, who collaborated to share their story.

For Chris, it’s been another way to remain close with the family of his wife all these years later.
This project really strengthens our bond,” he told TopMob News alongside Suzette. “Even when things are already going well, collaborating on something like this, even with how close we already are, takes our connection to another level.
After all, they have a unique shared experience.
He explained that being with someone like Suzette, who truly understands him like no one else, creates a uniquely close connection.

Despite facing difficulties throughout the years, Suzette emphasized that nothing could ever break the family’s connection.
We definitely had our disagreements, like any family does, but we’ve moved past them now. I’ll always think of Chris as family, and I know he feels the same way about me. That’s what matters most.
