Bringing the events of Agents of SHIELD into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline could resolve several long-standing plot inconsistencies. While the MCU has accumulated numerous plot holes over its 17 years, some could be easily explained if the Agents of SHIELD series was officially considered part of the established story. The show, which aired on ABC from 2013 to 2020, followed Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) and his team of SHIELD agents after Coulson was brought back to life.
As a long-time Marvel viewer, I know a lot of us really enjoyed Agents of SHIELD, and there’s been debate about whether it officially fits into the main MCU timeline. Let me clear things up: it doesn’t. While it could exist in another reality within the multiverse, it’s not happening on Earth-616, the primary MCU setting. However, if Marvel did decide to bring elements of SHIELD into the main timeline, it could actually patch up some long-standing plot holes. That would be huge for the MCU, and honestly, I’m hoping they address those inconsistencies one way or another, even if it’s not through SHIELD!
5) The Existence of the MCUâs Life Model Decoys

In the 2012 film The Avengers, Tony Stark jokingly claimed to be a âLife Model Decoyâ to avoid talking to Coulson. This was a nod to Marvel comic book fans and hinted that LMDs already existed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Later, in season 3 of Agents of SHIELD (four years later), Holden Radcliffe actually created them. If Agents of SHIELD is considered part of the official MCU timeline, Starkâs earlier comment makes more sense, but it would also alter the established history of LMDs in the MCU.
4) HYDRAâs Quick Disappearance in the MCU Was Much Slower in Agents of SHIELD

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it was shocking to discover that the evil group HYDRA had been secretly growing within SHIELD for years. While the Agents of SHIELD TV show explored the consequences of this revelation thoroughly, the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films didnât. The Avengers quickly defeated HYDRA in Avengers: Age of Ultron, wrapping up that storyline almost as soon as it began. If the events of Agents of SHIELD were included in the MCUâs timeline, HYDRAâs downfall would have been a longer, more realistic process. Coulsonâs team continued fighting the remaining HYDRA members for years after their exposure in 2014, which would have added depth to the overall narrative.
3) The Avengers Activities in Sokovia Donât Make Sense Without Agents of SHIELD

Several plot points in Avengers: Age of Ultron were actually resolved through the Agents of SHIELD TV series, rather than within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Specifically, it was Phil Coulson who discovered Baron von Struckerâs base and the Mind Stone thanks to a signal from Lokiâs scepter â something the Avengers wouldnât have done on their own. Furthermore, Coulsonâs work on the Theta Protocol in Agents of SHIELD enabled the rebuilt SHIELD helicarrier to assist in evacuating Sokovia during the attack by Ultron. Recognizing Agents of SHIELD as official MCU canon would therefore fill in these important story gaps and make the overall narrative more cohesive.
2) Asgardians on Earth Havenât Been Explored Fully

Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, itâs long been known that Asgardians have visited Earth â or Midgard, as they call it â many times over the centuries. These visits inspired the stories of Norse mythology, but we havenât seen much of that history shown on screen in the MCUâŠuntil Agents of SHIELD. That series regularly featured Asgardians on Earth. Following the events of Thor: The Dark World, we learned that Professor Elliot Randolph was actually an Asgardian warrior who had been living on Earth for centuries, and Lady Sif frequently returned to help Coulsonâs team. With Asgardians now permanently settled on Earth after Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, fans are eager to learn more about their past and how theyâve shaped Earthâs history.
1) The Growth of the MCUâs Powered Individuals

In the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War, Vision pointed out that the number of people with superpowers had increased dramatically since Tony Stark first became Iron Man in 2008. While this wasnât a major focus in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe films at the time, it was a big deal on the Agents of SHIELD television show. By the time Civil War came out, Agents of SHIELD had already shown how people gained powers through projects like Centipede, random experiments, and even by becoming Inhumans â introducing dozens of new superpowered characters. Visionâs comment would have meant even more if it had included all the characters from Agents of SHIELD, and it would be fantastic to see some of those characters become part of the official MCU storyline.
