There’s nothing quite like a good plot twist in a TV show. When a series takes you by surprise with an unexpected turn of events, it’s incredibly exciting. Think of the classic twist endings of The Twilight Zone – that’s what made the show so memorable! Similarly, surprises like characters returning from the dead or unexpected pregnancies are what keep us hooked on ongoing shows.
Occasionally, a plot twist is so predictable that most viewers see it coming. While a well-made show can still be enjoyable even with a foreseeable twist, it can also be a letdown when the surprise is ruined. This has happened in a number of shows lately.
7) Eleanor Is Really In The Bad Place

Everyone remembers the big twist at the end of season one of The Good Place, but it’s easy to forget that the characters themselves didn’t initially know they were in the Bad Place. While considered a fantastic plot twist, many viewers actually predicted it because Eleanor’s past actions made it seem unlikely she’d end up in the Good Place.
The twist that the Good Place was actually the Bad Place wasn’t very surprising, particularly since Eleanor struggled so much to behave in a ‘good’ way. Still, it’s a funny moment because the characters’ cluelessness – even when things were clearly off – is amusing.
6) The Mother In How I Met Your Mother Is Dead

Many fans were disappointed with the ending of How I Met Your Mother, and a big reason why was the reveal that the mother had passed away. It didn’t feel like a genuine twist because Ted was telling the story to his children without their mother present, leaving her fate uncertain throughout the series.
The biggest letdown of the finale was that Robin didn’t end up being the children’s mother, and the timing of the mother’s death felt forced to set up Robin and Ted’s relationship. The whole disappointing ending could have been avoided if the writers hadn’t chosen such a predictable path with the mother’s storyline.
5) Stranger Things‘ Hopper Didn’t Really Die

Most viewers didn’t believe Hopper would stay dead after the end of Stranger Things Season 3, and the teasers for Season 4 quickly proved them right. While the show didn’t really try to hide the fact that he was still alive, even a more secretive promotional campaign wouldn’t have created a genuine surprise.
The biggest hint that Hopper didn’t actually die was the fact that his body was never discovered after he seemingly gave his life to save everyone at the gate – it’s a classic TV trope to leave a body missing when a character survives. Despite this, many viewers found the twist a little underwhelming, as it lessened the impact of Hopper’s heroic act. Interestingly, the actor David Harbour actually believes Hopper’s character should have died much sooner in the series.
4) Violet Was Already Dead in American Horror Story: Murder House

A key element of American Horror Story is its ability to surprise and frighten viewers with unexpected plot twists. However, the show’s attempt at a shocking reveal in Murder House—that Violet had actually been dead for a while—didn’t quite succeed.
Before the big reveal, Violet had been missing frequently and seemed distant from everyone else. The show had also previously shared that she’d tried to end her life, and it was unclear whether she’d survived. Because of this, many viewers believed she hadn’t made it.
3) Alison Is Alive On Pretty Little Liars

Most viewers of Pretty Little Liars had already figured out Alison was still alive. The show dropped hints for seasons – like rumors of people spotting her – so when the truth was finally revealed, it wasn’t a surprise and didn’t have much impact.
Honestly, this reveal fell completely flat. For a show that built its reputation on clever mysteries and shocking twists, it was a real letdown. My biggest issue? It happened way too late. By this point, most of the audience had probably already pieced things together, and it lost all its impact. They really should have played this card much earlier in the season.
2) Kreese Escapes From Prison in Cobra Kai
Kreese was a major villain in Cobra Kai, so it seemed unlikely he’d stay in jail for long. When he was arrested for assault and attempted murder at the end of Season 4, most viewers expected he’d find a way out, and weren’t surprised when he escaped.
Kreese is found guilty and spends much of Season 5 in jail, eventually escaping with a clever plan involving Jell-O. While his escape wasn’t a huge shock, it felt right because Stringray had already admitted the truth and cleared Kreese of wrongdoing. So, even though it was easy to see coming, the twist was still rewarding.
1) Jon Snow Returns From The Dead in Game of Thrones

Everyone remembers how many characters died in Game of Thrones, but many fans believed Jon Snow wouldn’t stay dead. He was stabbed by members of the Night’s Watch at the end of season 5, and because his death seemed to fulfill an ancient prophecy about a prince being reborn, people expected him to return.
Jon Snow died while close to Melisandre, a priestess famous for bringing people back to life, heavily hinting at his potential resurrection. The prophecy that the reborn prince would side with the White Walkers, combined with his family name ‘Snow’, also strongly suggested his fate was connected to them.
