It’s been 34 years since Paramount Pictures released a reboot that’s still considered one of the best ever, and the franchise continues to thrive. While many movie fans dislike reboots and remakes, they can be truly exceptional when done well, even surpassing the originals. The horror genre offers some great examples. Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is often considered better than the original, and John Carpenter’s 1980s The Thing and David Cronenberg’s The Fly both improved upon their predecessors.
The Addams Family saw a resurgence in 1991 thanks to Barry Sonnenfeld’s successful reboot movie, and the franchise continues to thrive even today, 34 years later.
Barry Sonnenfeld Rebooted The Addams Family to Great Acclaim

In 1991, Barry Sonnenfeld successfully revived The Addams Family for a new generation. The franchise originally started as a comic strip in The New Yorker in 1938, which then became a popular television series in 1964 starring John Astin, Carolyn Jones, and Jackie Coogan. The family’s spooky and humorous adventures continued with an animated series in the 1970s, and they even teamed up with Scooby-Doo in a crossover event.
Despite existing before, The Addams Family truly became a sensation when Barry Sonnenfeld directed the 1991 film. Starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston as Gomez and Morticia, and Christina Ricci and Jimmy Workman as Wednesday and Pugsley, the movie centered around the reappearance of Gomez’s long-lost brother, Uncle Fester, who had been missing for 25 years. The story began with a swindler impersonating Fester to steal the family’s money, but took a surprising turn when the imposter was revealed to be the real Fester, having lost his memory.
The film took a simple story – the kind you’d find in short comics or half-hour TV shows – and expanded it into a hugely successful feature movie. Despite costing only $30 million to make, it earned $191 million in theaters and generally received good reviews. It also revived interest in the Addams Family franchise, which had been dormant for nearly twenty years. Best of all, it led to an even better sequel, Addams Family Values. Though it earned slightly less at the box office, critics loved it, and it’s now considered one of the best dark comedies of the 1990s.
The actors were fantastic, and the director, Sonnenfeld, really understood the show’s dark, quirky comedy. He added jokes perfectly, making this reboot one of the best around. It also successfully breathed new life into a series that hadn’t been a major hit originally.
The Addams Family Remains a Success With Wednesday

Following the popularity of The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, a new cartoon series aired on ABC in 1992 and 1993, mirroring the characters’ movie appearances. Another television series followed in 1998 on the Fox Family Channel. However, the franchise experienced a significant resurgence in 2019 with the release of The Addams Family animated movie, which was followed by a sequel in 2021.
2022 saw the release of Wednesday, a live-action spin-off series on Netflix starring Jenna Ortega as the iconic Wednesday Addams. The show was a hit, even bringing back Christina Ricci – who originally played Wednesday in the 1991 Addams Family film – as a villain. With a fantastic supporting cast including Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, and Fred Armisen, the series was a success in every way.
The show Wednesday was incredibly popular and quickly renewed for a second season, which came out in two parts in 2025. Netflix was so confident in its success that they ordered a third season even before the second one launched! This shows that The Addams Family, after being successfully updated by Barry Sonnenfeld 34 years ago, is still a huge hit with audiences today.
