It’s been twenty years since director James Cameron made a film that wasn’t part of the Avatar series. His last narrative feature film outside of Avatar was the 1997 Best Picture winner, Titanic. Since then, Cameron has largely focused on Pandora, the world of Avatar, releasing Avatar in 2009, Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, and with another film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, coming out this year. His last nonAvatar project was the 2005 documentary Aliens of the Deep*.
James Cameron’s fans have several exciting projects to anticipate. While he’s hinted at future Avatar films (a fourth and fifth have been discussed), the next Avatar movie seems to be his last sequel for the foreseeable future. He’s also revealed a number of new films he plans to direct or produce. Now, we know what his next directorial project will be – something other than Avatar – and it’s scheduled for release next year.
James Cameron Teams With Billie Eilish for 3D Concert Film
Billie Eilish and acclaimed director James Cameron announced today that they collaborated to create a concert film of Eilish’s recent world tour. Titled Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), the film will be released on March 20, 2026. Eilish expressed her excitement, calling the collaboration a dream come true, while Cameron described working on the 3D movie as an honor and a great experience.
The unexpected collaboration between Cameron and Eilish actually makes a lot of sense. While Eilish has experience directing her own music videos, Cameron is a leading expert in 3D camera work and creating stunning visuals with that technology.
Let’s not forget, both Cameron and Eilish have serious Oscar pedigree. Cameron’s already a three-time winner, taking home prizes for editing, directing, and, of course, Best Picture with Titanic. And Eilish? She’s a two-time winner herself, having snagged Best Original Song for both the No Time to Die theme and, more recently, “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. It’s impressive company, to say the least.
James Cameron fans hoping he’ll continue making films beyond the Avatar series have reason to be optimistic. He already has two big projects planned after Avatar: Fire and Ash. He’s working on a movie based on Charles R. Pellegrino’s The Last Train from Hiroshima, and another adapting Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy novel, The Devils. While both are still in the early stages of development, it’s unclear when Cameron will begin production on either one.
