As a movie critic, I’m really excited about how James Gunn and DC Studios are planning to introduce Robin. They’ve got a fantastic opportunity with The Brave and the Bold – not just to introduce him, but potentially tell his origin story for the first time on the big screen. The hints about Damian Wayne appearing are promising, and if they follow through, we could see the DC Universe explore its full roster of Robins in a way we’ve never seen before in live-action. It’s a smart move that could really pay off by 2026.
Exploring Damian Wayne’s story is particularly compelling because he’s a more recent character to become Robin, following many other popular heroes who’ve held the role before moving on to different identities. Interestingly, an upcoming DC release seems ideally positioned to begin laying the groundwork for his story, based on what’s been revealed so far.
Clayface Has A Perfect Way To Tie Robin’s Story Into The DCU Movie
The upcoming Clayface movie in the DC Universe seems to be taking inspiration from various sources, but writer Mike Flanagan has specifically highlighted the Batman: The Animated Series episode “Feat of Clay” as a key influence on the script. This is fitting, as “Feat of Clay” is a strong introduction to the Clayface character and emphasizes the sadness of his story. Drawing from this classic episode also allows for exciting possibilities in the film’s narrative.
Besides “Feat of Clay”, another well-remembered and significant animated episode featuring Clayface is “Growing Pains” from The New Batman Adventures. The story centers on Robin trying to shield a young girl from what seems like an abusive father. However, it’s eventually revealed that this man isn’t her biological father at all – he’s Clayface, and the girl is actually a fragment of him who has developed her own independent consciousness and become like his child.
This episode stands out because of its unpredictable mystery, but more importantly, it cleverly connects the storylines of Robin and Clayface. This gives Robin a strong personal reason to oppose the villain, which could be a compelling direction for the DCU’s interconnected stories, especially considering Clayface’s earlier role in Creature Commandos.
I really think it would be smart for the Clayface storyline to connect with what’s happening in this episode, or at least hint at it for future stories. They don’t have to rush into finding a new Robin right now, but weaving this plot in would be great. Plus, I’m loving the creepy side of Clayface’s powers – the idea that he can split off into completely separate, thinking beings with their own lives is fascinating and they should definitely explore that more!
Using Clayface To Introduce Robin Could Be A Perfect Way To Balance Out A Missing Batman
Although fans are hoping to see Batman in the upcoming Clayface movie, his role will likely be small, if he appears at all. This is because a new actor hasn’t been cast as Batman for the DC Universe yet, and production on his first DCU film, The Brave and the Bold, is still a ways off and requires casting to happen first.
Instead of focusing on established characters, it might be more beneficial for the franchise to hint at Robin’s future. While unexpected, this approach would allow for stories that expand beyond Batman’s world in Gotham, and could be especially useful if the DCU eventually introduces teams like the Teen Titans.
We won’t see Clayface in theaters for a while, so it’s going to be a wait to see how the movie plays out. Hopefully, the story will tie into the larger DC Universe, maybe by exploring Clayface’s connection to Robin or through another interesting storyline.
