Was DC K.O. a Bait and Switch? Because Fans Aren’t Happy

Many DC Comics fans are disappointed with how the recent “DC K.O.” event has unfolded. For months, there was a lot of excitement building around this large-scale story, which centers on a tournament where heroes and villains battle for godlike power. That excitement increased when DC announced the 32 characters participating and then released the bracket showing the first 16 matches.

I was really excited for the first round of DC K.O., especially after seeing it in last month’s issue, #2. But honestly, it wasn’t what I expected. Instead of the big hero vs. villain fights we all anticipated – like Superman against Giganta or Wonder Woman taking on Starro – it turned out to be a scavenger hunt for powerful artifacts. The comic itself was great, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of fans, myself included, were pretty disappointed. We were hoping for action, and it felt like we were promised one thing and got another. It really makes you wonder if DC K.O. misled us a bit, doesn’t it?

Scott Snyder Warned Us, But the Bracket Caused a Lot of Confusion

As a follower of DC Comics news, I wasn’t surprised by what happened in the second issue. I’d known for weeks that a scavenger hunt would be included in DC K.O. because the event’s writer announced it! The tournament bracket for DC K.O. was leaked online in early September, showing the initial pairings. Soon after, Scott Snyder, the writer, shared on social media that not all rounds would be simple one-on-one battles, effectively revealing the scavenger hunt element of issue #2.

I understand many people aren’t closely following the recent comic book discussions. The popular bracket format made it easy to share predictions and sparked a lot of fun debate – I even made some TikToks about the potential fights! However, even with all the excitement, we shouldn’t forget that Snyder cautioned us to be realistic about what could be accomplished in the second issue. Trying to fit sixteen fights into a single comic was always an ambitious goal.

I understand why some people were confused and felt misled. The way DC K.O. was promoted as a tournament, especially with the bracket format, led many to expect more direct, one-on-one fights. It’s also confusing that DC Comics has a bracket challenge on their website asking fans to predict winners throughout the entire tournament, from the first round to the champion. While I’m not sure how many people saw this challenge, it certainly contributed to the confusion surrounding issue #2.

DC K.O. is Still Delivering What it Promised

Comic books definitely have a reputation for misleading covers. Think back to the Silver Age – many covers showed Superman doing crazy things, but the story itself would turn out to be a dream or illusion. And just recently, DC Comics built up a lot of hype for a Batman and Catwoman wedding that ultimately didn’t happen, which frustrated both fans and those who sell comics.

Look, don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t some misleading trick. The core idea of heroes and villains battling it out is still totally there, it just unfolded differently than I initially expected. Honestly, the tournament setup and some of the promotional stuff led me to believe something else would happen. But the comic itself delivered on the basic promise: awesome fights! And let’s be real, with some of these characters facing off, a full-on brawl was the only way they were going to make it past the first round – especially Harley Quinn, who was originally pitted against Metamorpho, a seriously tough matchup!

It would have been great to see a more extended tournament with all the initial matches played out. However, that would have taken too much time, and DC doesn’t seem to have the space for that in this event. In fact, even the second round of the DC K.O. tournament is being spread across separate issues and tie-ins instead of the main series, just to showcase all eight fights. Ultimately, we’re getting a tough competition, and while I understand why some fans are disappointed, I don’t think DC misled us.
