Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II remake project seemingly confirmed by fascinating new report

A remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords was reportedly in development, though its current status is unclear.

Fans of the original Knights of the Old Republic are eagerly awaiting a remake. A new version of BioWare’s acclaimed 2003 role-playing game has been in development for some time, initially by Aspyr and now by Saber Interactive.

Obsidian Entertainment’s 2004 game, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, was also reportedly planned for a remake, but it’s currently unknown if that project is still happening.

This news comes from a stunning piece of investigative journalism by Stephen Totilio at Game File.

The main subject of Totilio’s report is a recent legal case involving Aspyr, a game developer famous for bringing older Star Wars games to new platforms. The company was sued by a fan named Malachi Mickelonis, who claimed they were misled by false advertising.

You may recall that Aspyr announced they were bringing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords to the Nintendo Switch. Excitingly, they planned to not only port the game but also include content that was cut from the original 2004 version – content that fans had previously restored through mods.

In the end, Aspyr wasn’t able to recover the missing content and had to inform players – who had already purchased the game – about the unfortunate situation.

Totilio’s report thoroughly examines the official documents from the lawsuit, carefully analyzing what happened to the originally planned content. It’s a valuable read, and you can access it with a free trial to the Game File Substack.

The report reveals a secret project, internally known as “Juliet,” which appears to be a complete rebuild of the game Knights of the Old Republic II. This remake was reportedly being developed at the same time as the already known Knights of the Old Republic I remake, as of March of this year.

During discussions about what needed to be removed from the Switch version of the game, a Lucasfilm executive reportedly said their priority was “Juliet.”

Following a question from a lawyer, Lucasfilm Games VP Doug Reilly clarified that “Juliet” was the internal codename for a project to completely remake Knights of the Old Republic II. The plan was to update the game with contemporary graphics and gameplay for modern systems, while preserving the original story, characters, and overall content. Reilly stated they were discussing this possibility with Aspyr.

As a big Star Wars fan, it’s really exciting to hear that ‘Juliet’ is basically a complete remake of Knights of the Old Republic 2! It sounds like Lucasfilm was much more invested in this new project than they were with the Switch port Aspyr was developing.

Would Juliet add the removed material back in? According to Reilly, the intention was to recreate that content.

Totilio notes at this point: “I can’t confirm the status of the remake.”

Totilio also mentioned that attorney Ray Kim questioned Reilly this past March. Reilly stated that Juliet is still planned for the project, and they’re beginning work on a remake of the first Knights of the Old Republic game.

According to Reilly, Aspyr is no longer involved with those games. He stated that Saber-owned Mad Head Games is now handling them, which aligns with previous reports. Saber did not respond when asked for a project update.

Essentially, Saber isn’t only rebuilding the original Knights of the Old Republic; they’ve also considered remaking the second game at one point.

Hopefully, the complete version will be released someday, finally resolving this issue.

Once we’ve finished up these tasks, we can refocus on advocating for a third Knights of the Old Republic game. We’ll share any updates as soon as we have them.
