A new version of the superhero?

After James Gunn’s Superman became the biggest superhero hit of 2025, the trailer for Supergirl has arrived. We first saw a quick preview of Supergirl at the end of Gunn’s popular film.

What we know about story from the Supergirl trailer

The new film will explore Supergirl’s difficult past, focusing on Kara Zor-El’s life before she arrived on Earth. Director James Gunn has explained that unlike Superman, who was raised with love from infancy, Supergirl spent her early years surviving on a fragment of Krypton, witnessing tragedy around her for the first fourteen years of her life. This version of the character is portrayed as a survivor of Argo City, aligning more closely with her original comic book appearance from 1959, rather than being a direct escapee from Krypton itself.

The cast….

The new film features Milly Alcock as Supergirl, marking her as the fifth live-action and third film actress to take on the role. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa, who is returning to the DC universe after previously playing Aquaman. Momoa has long hoped to play the character Lobo within the DC universe and initially expected to be offered that role, but was instead cast as Aquaman.

Behind the scenes stories….

Craig Gillespie directed the movie, working from a script by Ana Nogueira. This version of the superhero is quite different from the 1980s film starring Helen Slater. Nogueira initially wrote a script for a Supergirl spin-off featuring Sasha Calle, but that project was canceled when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC’s future films. She was then asked to work on this new movie instead.

Supergirl will be released in the UK on 26th June 2026
