With Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of Wuthering Heights set to premiere in just a few months, Audible has announced a companion audio drama is also being created.
Daryl McCormack, known for his roles in Peaky Blinders and Bad Sisters, will play Heathcliff in a new project of the same name. The series will explore the backstory of the famous and troubled character, offering a fresh and intense take on the classic story.
Gracie Oddie-James wrote the drama, and Mahalia Belo directed it. The production team also recently created the Audible adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
The story of Heathcliff includes a three-year gap before he becomes consumed by vengeance. These years were a time when he had the chance for happiness, independence, and a different kind of romance.

Okay, so after Cathy basically crushes his soul, Heathcliff runs off to London, desperately trying to escape his pain. It’s there he meets Sir Francis Barber, a really interesting character – he’s Samuel Johnson’s adopted son, and he’s Black. Sir Francis becomes something of a mentor to Heathcliff, pushing him to build a new life for himself and leave the past behind.
During his journey, he encounters Lord Montgomery, a daring gambler, and Rhoda Pascal, a captivating courtesan. These encounters inspire him to seek both wealth and a sense of community.
As he gets to know Rhoda better, he begins to understand his own identity. However, Cathy’s haunting memory powerfully pulls him towards his troubled past and the confusing events that happened at Wuthering Heights.
The audio drama will star McCormack, recently featured in ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ and Oddie-James. Joining them are talented actors including Arinzé Kene (‘The Pass’), Charlie Rowe (‘Slow Horses’), Sagar Radia (‘Industry’), Raffey Cassidy (‘The Brutalist’), and Tanya Moodie (‘Silo’).

Honestly, playing Heathcliff was amazing! He’s such a complicated and fascinating character – one of the most interesting I’ve ever come across in any book, really. It made the role incredibly captivating to dive into.
This story explores what happened during his lost years and his path to understanding himself and finding inner peace. It’s designed to make you feel sympathy for him, even with his imperfections. He’s a classic anti-hero, and you might find yourself really feeling for him – perhaps even heartbroken – as you learn his story.
Aurelie de Troyer, who leads content creation for Audible in Europe, explained that listeners worldwide enjoy classic books, and Wuthering Heights is particularly beloved. She said they’re thrilled to offer a fresh take on the story of the famous character Heathcliff by delving into his backstory and a previously unexplored period of his life.
Heathcliff will be available to purchase and listen to at www.audible.co.uk.
