One Piece’s Laugh Tale Arc Is Close, But The Story Is Far From Over

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga.

One Piece is an adventure story centered around the Straw Hat Pirates and their perilous journey across the seas. Each member of the crew has their own personal dream they’re striving to achieve. Their ultimate goal is to reach Laugh Tale, a legendary island at the end of the Grand Line that isn’t on any map. The only crew to ever find it was the Roger Pirates, led by the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Twenty-two years ago, during his execution, Roger revealed he had hidden all the world’s treasure in one place. This treasure promises immense wealth, fame, and power to whoever can find it.

The treasure, called the One Piece, became famous worldwide, launching the Great Pirate Era and motivating many to brave the dangerous seas. Reaching the final island, Laugh Tale, requires not only strength but also intelligence and good fortune. Its location is hidden, revealed only by translating four ancient texts called Road Poneglyphs – a language few can understand, including the crew’s archeologist, Nico Robin. After over 28 years of the manga being published, the long-awaited Laugh Tale is within reach, though many mysteries remain to be solved.

One Piece Creator Confirms The Story Is Rushing To Its Finale

One Piece is a hugely popular anime and manga, so it’s always a major highlight of Jump Festa, the big anime and manga event held by Shueisha. Jump Festa 2026 recently ended on December 21st, 2025, with a One Piece presentation that revealed exciting news about the upcoming Elbaf Arc in the anime. As he does every year, creator Eiichiro Oda also shared a detailed message with fans, outlining what they can expect in 2026.

The official One Piece X account shared an English translation of a message originally posted in Japanese. In it, creator Eiichiro Oda quickly talks about a remake of the anime and the new movie, then builds excitement for the second season of the live-action series. He finishes by discussing the manga, specifically the end of the current flashback arc and the chaotic events to come in Elbaph. He also briefly wonders if fans will finally discover Laugh Tale Island, the legendary destination of the Pirate King’s crew.

The current storyline will also introduce new characters, including a mysterious, scarred man who seems to have the final Road Poneglyph. This is a crucial piece of the puzzle, as the Straw Hat crew already possesses three Poneglyphs and needs this last one to find Laugh Tale. The author promises the story will move very quickly, focusing on important meetings and solving long-standing mysteries as they enter the final saga.

Laugh Tale Won’t Be the Final Arc of One Piece

The Straw Hat Pirates are heading towards Laugh Tale, where Luffy aims to become the Pirate King. But for Luffy, the title isn’t the ultimate goal – he truly desires complete freedom, and being Pirate King will help him achieve that. We learned in the Wano Country arc that Luffy has another, secret dream, one that only becoming the Pirate King can unlock. While we don’t know exactly what this dream is yet, it’s something the previous Pirate King, Roger, once spoke about but never managed to fulfill.

The island holds the key to understanding the long-lost Void Century, and Luffy’s choices there will reshape the world. A disagreement about these secrets sparked a massive war over 800 years ago, and that conflict is about to reignite on a global scale. Luffy will find himself at the heart of this new war, ultimately fulfilling his fate as the next Joyboy – a figure with the incredible power of the Sun God Nika.

The connection between Luffy and the legendary figure Joyboy suggests Luffy will inevitably oppose the World Government, who have ruled through fear and control for over 800 years. This major conflict won’t begin until after Luffy discovers the truth on Laugh Tale island, though the exact location of the war remains unknown. The war will have global consequences, involving nearly all of the important characters, potentially extending the manga’s run for a significant amount of time.
