We’re introduced to Baranov as a theatre director, but he quickly becomes the key strategist behind Vladimir Putin (played with chilling precision by Jude Law), the head of the FSB. Putin gradually takes control from the weakening and alcoholic President Boris Yeltsin. However, it’s Putin who the wealthy Russian oligarchs see as someone they can control, with Baranov subtly pulling the strings from behind the scenes, enjoying the true power.
