CD Projekt Red is officially working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Currently, details are scarce, including when it might be released. However, a Polish analyst, Mateusz Chrzanowski, suggests the sequel is planned for release in the fourth quarter of 2030 – that’s October through December – after The Witcher 4. If accurate, this means the game is still around five years away and will likely be designed for the next generation of consoles, including the PS6 and the next Xbox, which are anticipated to be available by then.
Work on the next game started way back in 2022, meaning it could take eight years to finish. While CD Projekt Red is also working on The Witcher 4, that’s a separate team. It’s likely they’re taking their time after the rocky start of the first game, wanting to ensure this one is fully polished. Plus, reports suggest they’re adding multiplayer features, which will naturally extend the development process.
A Major Change From the First Game
CD Projekt Red once considered adding multiplayer to Cyberpunk 2077, but ultimately didn’t include it. Now, the upcoming sequel will feature multiplayer, which is a significant change. How well this multiplayer is integrated and how extensive it is could dramatically alter the core single-player RPG experience.
A Potential Problem for the Sequel
CD Projekt Red hasn’t really made a multiplayer game before, except for GWENT. That means they don’t have much experience in this area, so it’s hard to say how their new multiplayer project will turn out. Hopefully, they’ve brought in a lot of new talent to work on it, because it’s usually difficult for a team focused on single-player games to suddenly create a successful multiplayer experience.
Just keep in mind that this is just our opinion, so take it as you will. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, or you can discuss it further on the ComicBook Forum. Also, are you interested in seeing multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077?
