The 1990s produced a lot of fantastic films across all genres, but it’s surprisingly become a decade that people often forget when discussing classic movies. This is particularly true for horror, with many great films from the era rarely getting the attention they deserve. Horror has always been a popular genre, which means a lot of movies are made, and the 1990s were no different – there were plenty of options, but some really good ones have been overlooked.
We often think the best movies stick around in our memories, while bad ones fade away. But that’s not always true. Even truly great horror films aren’t always instantly popular, and can sometimes fail to find a large audience when they first come out. The 1990s produced a lot of excellent horror movies, and many of them still haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve.
7) In The Mouth Of Madness (1994)

John Carpenter’s “Apocalypse” trilogy – starting with the classic The Thing (1982), continuing with the often-overlooked Prince of Darkness (1987), and concluding with In the Mouth of Madness (1994) – is a strong series, even if it’s not the most famous horror franchise. In the Mouth of Madness, inspired by the writing of H.P. Lovecraft, is a particularly mind-bending film. It follows an insurance investigator as his grip on reality weakens and the boundaries between what’s real and what’s fiction become unclear. Featuring a fantastic performance by Sam Neill, it’s a truly great movie that unfortunately doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
6) Mimic (1997)

It’s easy to lose track of all the movies Guillermo del Toro has made, but some of his earlier work is particularly noteworthy. One example is his 1997 sci-fi horror film, Mimic, which tells the story of a genetically engineered insect that quickly evolves and starts hunting the people who created it. Mimic showed the potential of what would become a brilliant directing career for del Toro, and with a strong cast, it stands out as one of the most overlooked horror films of the 90s.
5) Hardware (1990)

While many scary robots have appeared in films, the one from the 1990 movie Hardware is often forgotten. The movie features a robot that can fix itself and goes on a violent spree in a rundown, futuristic city. It’s a fantastic example of the cyberpunk style that became popular in the 90s. Despite gaining a dedicated fanbase, Hardware doesn’t get the recognition it deserves when people talk about the best horror movies of that decade.
4) The Dark Half (1993)

I’ve always felt The Dark Half gets overlooked when people talk about great Stephen King movies, and that’s a shame. Released back in 1993, it’s about an author whose dark side – the persona he writes under – actually comes to life and starts committing murders. It’s directed by the amazing George A. Romero, and honestly, it’s a really well-done adaptation of King’s story. It’s a genuinely creepy and fun movie from the 90s that deserves way more recognition, in my opinion – a real hidden gem!
3) The Resurrected (1991)

Among excellent horror films from the 1990s that flew under the radar, The Resurrected is a standout. It didn’t get a wide release, going straight to video after a few film festival showings, which explains why it’s not well known. Based on H.P. Lovecraft’s story The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Resurrected is a genuinely unsettling and atmospheric film, and remains one of the most overlooked horror movies of the decade.
2) Ticks (1993)

Released in 1993, the horror-comedy Ticks is a fun, low-budget film from the 90s that often gets overlooked. It stars a young Seth Green, Alfonso Ribeiro, and Clint Howard. While it didn’t gain much attention due to being released directly to video, Ticks shares a similar vibe to James Gunn’s Slither, offering plenty of cheesy thrills and laughs, even if it hasn’t achieved the same cult status.
1) Stir of Echoes (1999)

Released in 1999, Stir of Echoes is a genuinely creepy horror film from the 90s that’s largely been forgotten. Starring Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Erbe, the movie centers on a man who starts having disturbing visions after a hypnosis session with his sister-in-law. While Kevin Bacon delivers a strong performance and director David Koepp creates a very tense and unsettling atmosphere, Stir of Echoes doesn’t often appear in discussions of classic horror films.
