In order to retrieve Kelly, Joan devises a strategy where she will infiltrate Kelly’s latest school, pretending to be an American reporter focusing on a story about British children at playtime.

Joan hasn’t shared with Boisie yet that she’s having Albie (Gershwyn Eustache Jr) help secure a passport for Kelly, but she’s pressing on with her plan to rob Bernard’s store. Alongside Albie, Paul, and Boisie, they discuss the details of the plan. It’s decided that Boisie and Paul will burglarize the store, grabbing the jewels quickly, while Joan is involved as well.

Following their departure from the shop, Albie informs Joan and Boisie that their destination will be another hidden spot, where a caravan is waiting for them before they head towards New Haven. However, during the workday, Tom (Jack Greenlees) seems to be keeping an eye on Bernard’s jewelry store, and it appears he is specifically watching over Joan.

That evening, Boisie is gathering his belongings and notices that Joan has prepared a small suitcase, evidently intended for Kelly. Later in the night, when he confronts Joan about it, his displeasure is palpable as he expresses to her that taking Kelly on the run isn’t in her best interest.

Even though Joan is eager to bring Kelly over earlier, Boisie reminds her about their initial plan and how he would eventually relocate back to the UK to take care of Kelly at the appropriate time.

Eventually, Boisie shares with Joan the details of his childhood, revealing that his mother often prioritized men over him, placing his safety at risk on numerous occasions. To make matters worse, she would even use the child support payments meant for Boisie for her own personal expenses.

On the day of the burglary, Joan heads off to work early and remains beyond usual hours for an inventory with Bernard. While they’re working, Bernard gets a call from someone requesting an immediate chat with Joan regarding the afternoon’s arrangements. Later in the day, Boisie shows up at the store and informs Joan that Paul has backed out of the heist, expressing doubts about her trustworthiness.

While Boisie advises pausing their actions temporarily, Joan advocates for pressing on with their plan, suggesting Albie look for another person to handle Paul’s tasks instead. Later, as they all sit in the van before breaking into the store, Boisie discovers that Paul’s replacement is none other than Gary (Nick Blood), Kelly’s father and Joan’s former partner.

In the act of gathering as many items as possible, Gary appears to be following a distinct strategy, which involves destroying the store and displaying a firearm to Joan as proof. He then selects some jewels for himself, leading to a disagreement with Boisie. However, he accidentally reveals to Bernard that Joan holds authority, causing Bernard to pull out the gun and aim it at the ceiling. Upon hearing the gunfire, Boisie rushes in to shield Joan, only to be shot by Bernard, who hits Boisie’s leg.

Does Boisie die?

In this scenario, Boisie begins to bleed profusely, and Joan pleads with Gary and even Bernard for assistance. However, Gary casually enters to gather his pilfered jewelry bag, departs without helping, informs Albie that Boisie has been shot, and commands him to drive instead.

Joan strives to halt Boisie’s leg from continuing to bleed and helps him stand so they can flee, but his condition worsens rapidly. Unbeknownst to Joan, Albie has abandoned them, leaving them stranded. In simpler terms, Joan is trying to stop Boisie’s wound from bleeding and get him on his feet so they can run away, but he gets worse fast. She doesn’t know that Albie isn’t with them anymore.

Boisie instructs Joan to fetch Kelly, and with her assistance, they manage to step outside. However, tragically, Boisie succumbs to his fate in the alleyway behind the store.

As Joan is left crying over Boisie’s body, she hears police sirens and runs away.

As Joan struggles to maintain her composure amidst finding Boisie’s blood on her, she takes a moment to regain her bearings before heading to find Kelly. Aware of the ticking clock, she swiftly tidies herself up in a nearby public restroom and switches into her disguise.

At Kelly’s school, she’s brought before the kids, and it takes Kelly aback to realize the woman is her mom. With a finger to her lips for silence, Joan guides Kelly aside, instructing her to gather at the gate later.

In our next encounter, it’s Kelly and Joan in a vehicle, with Joan attempting to lift her spirits by singing their shared tune. During their journey, Joan pauses to dial Albie’s residence, only to have Val (Laura Aikman) answer, visibly upset upon reading a note from Albie, indicating his departure from the country.

Moving towards their previously planned caravan hideout, Joan confides in Kelly that she must comply with her instructions and behave well. However, the pain of Boisie’s demise is overwhelming for Joan, making it difficult for her to maintain composure, even as Kelly attempts to lift her spirits. As Kelly exhibits her artwork, Joan notices that Kelly has sketched a portrait of her “other mother”, further aggravating Joan’s sorrow.

Inside, Kelly discovers Joan’s firearm hidden in her luggage, but before Kelly can act upon it, Joan enters the room in a hurry and prevents her from firing. As Joan expresses her affection for Kelly, it becomes evident that she has chosen to release Kelly from her presence.

Joan brings Kelly back to her foster family’s residence, and upon reaching Boisie’s house again, she decides to surrender to Tom and the authorities. She does this because she feels that there is no purpose left in life following the loss of Boisie and now, unfortunately, also Kelly.

Four years later, the story jumps ahead, revealing Joan standing on Spanish cliffs reminiscent of where she once walked with Boisie. This time, she’s dressed in a top that accentuates her tattoos over old scars from her childhood, and a car arrives, with Albie stepping out to greet her.

In a more casual and straightforward rephrasing, the dialogue could read: He carries a loaded suitcase over to Joan and carelessly spills its contents onto the floor. Joan reveals that she was released from prison ahead of schedule due to good behavior. She confides in Albie that she’s returning to work but intends to do so legitimately. As he departs, she warns him, “And you, beware of those who might have ill intentions.

Joan’s next appearance is on ITV1 this coming Sunday, 6th October, starting at 9pm. Additionally, you can watch the entire series on demand via ITVX.
