As a seasoned gamer and a die-hard fan of both graphic novels and big-budget productions, I must say that the first look at “The Electric State” has left me utterly exhilarated! The Russo Bros have always been known for their ability to assemble stellar casts, and this time is no exception. With a roster that includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and Billy Bob Thornton – just to name a few – it’s clear that this film is going to be a visual spectacle.
A sneak peek at “The Electric State” has been shared online by the Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo), who will be in charge of directing this upcoming movie. The Russo Brothers are joining forces once more with their Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame screenwriting duo, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who are responsible for adapting the film from the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag.
In addition to assembling a highly impressive roster of well-known actors for The Electric State, the Russos have gathered stars such as Millie Bobby Brown (famous for Stranger Things and Damsel), Chris Pratt (renowned for Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World), Ke Huy Quan (appearing in Marvel’s Loki and Everything Everywhere All at Once), Stanley Tucci (known for Captain America: TFA and The Hunger Games), Jason Alexander (best recognized from Seinfeld), Brian Cox (famous for Succession), Jenny Slate (recognized from Venom), Giancarlo Esposito (well-known for The Mandalorian), Anthony Mackie (renowned for Captain America: Brave New World), and Billy Bob Thornton (popular for Fargo and Bad Santa). The narrative of “The Electric State” unfolds in a revamped setting of 1997. As humans are sealed off in their virtual reality headsets, and a persistent conflict rages on against bizarre mechanical monstrosities following a technological catastrophe, a young woman named Michelle embarks on a journey along the West Coast of the United States, accompanied by a robot, to locate her lost brother.
Millie Bobby Brown takes on the character of Michelle, with Anthony Mackie lending his voice to the robot, Herman. Strangely enough, Chris Pratt appears to be portraying a somewhat familiar rogue who is also seen gearing up for battle in one picture. Tucci seems to embody a powerful figure or scientist as Ethan Skate, while Esposito’s character, Colonel Marshall Bradbury, looks like a strong henchman or collaborator. Ke Huy Quan reprises his Goonies/Loki persona as the eccentric Dr. Amherst. A photo of Brown holding a gun surrounded by an army of animatronic robots might suggest that we’ll hear vocal performances from Cox, Slate, Thorton, Alan Tudyk, and Woody Harrelson in their respective roles, including this version of Mr. Peanut played by Harrelson.
Through their studio AGBO, the Russos are creating “The Electric State,” a project that, similar to “The Gray Man” or the world of “Citadel” on TV, carries a hefty financial risk, with an estimated budget exceeding $320 million. However, these high-stakes investments appear to be proving profitable so far. If “The Electric State” should underperform, the Russos have two more Avengers films, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” that could potentially generate additional revenue.
The Electric State is set for release on Netflix in March 2025.
