Marvel fans have a lot to look forward to in 2026! The year will be packed with new releases, including the movies Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday in July and December. On the TV side, season two of Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97 are coming in the spring, along with the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, titled Vision Quest, and a special featuring The Punisher. Things kick off strong with the release of Wonder Man and other highly anticipated series just a month into the new year.
The new Marvel series Wonder Man will premiere on Disney+ on January 27th. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, and Ben Kingsley reprises his role as Trevor Slattery. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the series is expected to be a major launch for the MCU in 2026 and promises to be different from anything the franchise has done before.
Wonder Man Gets Meta as a Show About Superhero Films (Or Trying to Get a Role in One)
What sets Wonder Man apart is its interesting starting point. The story centers on Simon Williams, an actor hoping to land a role in a superhero movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also called Wonder Man. This role could be huge for his career, and Simon is convinced he’s perfect for it, even if others aren’t so sure. He finds out about the audition through a surprising meeting with Trevor Slattery. Things get complicated, though, because of Slattery’s history with the Ten Rings and the fact that Simon secretly has superpowers.
The very idea behind Wonder Man – a show about the casting of a superhero movie – is a fresh and interesting direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It promises to be self-aware and lighthearted, while still feeling like a natural part of the MCU. Based on the trailer, the show seems to strike the perfect balance between seriousness and fun – something the MCU could really use after some recent projects haven’t quite hit the mark.
Wonder Man Will Also Take on the MCU’s Biggest Threat: Superhero Fatigue

What sets Wonder Man apart and could make it unique within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is its planned exploration of ‘superhero fatigue’ – the growing sense that audiences are becoming tired of superhero stories. Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has mentioned the series will address this issue, offering commentary on it without compromising the show’s entertainment or central plot.
He acknowledged people might talk about getting tired of superhero stories, but he sees that as just a superficial concern. The show isn’t really about that. Instead, it centers on an actor’s personal growth and the bonds of friendship.
Though the MCU has touched on self-awareness and addressed potential superhero fatigue before – with jokes in Deadpool & Wolverine and fourth-wall breaks in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law – Wonder Man is doing something different. It’s unique in that it’s combining both of those elements and setting the story within the world of the entertainment industry itself. It will be fascinating to see what the series explores through this lens, while also telling the story of Simon Williams and his connection with Slattery, a character who’s been a major topic of discussion since his surprising backstory was revealed in Iron Man 3.
Wonder Man will debut January 27, 2026, on Disney+.
