Cancelled Shonen Jump Series’ Creator Is Returning After Two Years With a New Manga

First published in 1968, Weekly Shonen Jump from Shueisha has become the best-selling manga magazine ever, thanks to hugely popular series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Even today, it remains a leader in the manga world, consistently launching new hits that define modern shonen manga, such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia. While Dragon Ball and other titles became legendary, many once-popular series have faded into obscurity. Interestingly, the magazine has far more lesser-known or cancelled manga than truly successful ones. Ice-Head Gill by Ikuo Hachiya is a prime example of a series that didn’t capture the attention of readers or critics.

The manga first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2023, but was unfortunately cancelled after only 20 chapters in November. It’s set in a frozen world called the Great Ice, perpetually covered in ash-like snow. The story follows Gill Sol, a young man who flees the capital and finds work as an axeman for Lord Mela. His life changes when someone seeks him out, bringing secrets from his past to light. Though the artwork was good, the story wasn’t fully successful. Now, two years later, the creator, Hachiya, is eager to publish another work in Shonen Jump.

Ice-Head Gill Creator Is Returning With a New One-Shot Manga in Shonen Jump+

Manga artist Hachiya is planning a new short manga, set to be released on the Shonen Jump+ app on January 7th, 2026. This won’t be their first one-shot on the platform – they previously published Seiryuu no Magoi in 2022, even before their series Ice-Head Gill began. That earlier story was completely separate from their work in Weekly Shonen Jump. Details about the new one-shot are still under wraps, but the news comes from the trusted Shonen Jump source @WSJ_manga on X.

Shonen Jump frequently publishes short, standalone manga stories, which benefits both the platform and the artists. These ‘one-shots’ allow creators to showcase their skills, build a body of work, and get noticed by editors. If a one-shot is popular, it could lead to a full, ongoing manga series, though that doesn’t always happen.

It’s great news that the author will be back next year, suggesting we’ll likely see more of their work in the future. You can currently read Ice-Head Gill on the Manga Plus app, and find all the chapters – plus links to buy the two available volumes in both print and digital formats – on the Viz Media website.
