Erik Menendez Reacts to Brother Lyle's Apology for Molesting Him

As someone who has followed the Menendez Brothers case for years, the release of Netflix’s documentary titled “Menendez Brothers” was like revisiting an old, haunting memory. The brothers’ testimonies, particularly Lyle’s admission of molesting Erik and his tearful apology, resonated deeply with me.

Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez are reflecting on their harrowing testimonies.

In Netflix’s gripping new documentary, “Menendez Brothers,” I had the opportunity to delve into the shocking story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who provided a unique perspective on the 1989 killings of their parents, José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. The trials that ensued, commencing in 1993 and resulting in their conviction in 1996, were a significant part of this narrative. It was during their initial trial that the brothers disclosed harrowing accounts of sexual abuse by their father, an ordeal they claimed ultimately drove them to commit those heinous acts.

At the trial, Lyle confessed that the sexual encounters he experienced at the hands of José during his childhood, from age 6 to 8, led him to sexually abuse his younger brother when they were both teenagers.

“Yes,” a tearful Lyle replied to his lawyer Jill Lansing asking if he “did something” to Erik in video from the trial. “I took him out to the woods, and I played with Erik…in the same way. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

For Erik, who is now 53 years old, that moment was particularly moving as he recalled his brother’s apology, which occurred many years ago. “I can still remember the time he apologized to me in court for abusing me,” Erik said in the documentary. “That was a heart-wrenching experience for me.

He added, “He had never said he was sorry to me before.”

In his testimony, Lyle, who is now 56 years old, additionally disclosed that he had informed his mother Kitty about the abuse from their father, yet she did not seem to show any worry regarding these matters.

During the trial, Lyle explained, “She asked me to halt such behavior and accused me of overstating things. She also mentioned that my father would discipline me when I make mistakes. Furthermore, she expressed that my father loves me.

However, it’s worth noting that Erik specifically felt compelled to clarify the depth of his affection for his mother and the lingering guilt he harbors due to her passing.

He expressed in the documentary, “I deeply yearn for my mother’s presence. If only I could travel back in time to converse with her, to embrace her warmly, to tell her how much I love her, to let her know I wanted her approval and happiness for me, and to share joy and connection with her. All I long for is that.

In addition to their conversation, they touched upon the challenge they faced in revealing such a significant portion of their past during the trial. Lyle expressed his reluctance, stating that he found it extremely uncomfortable to discuss events from their past.

However, as defense expert Dr. Ann Burgess pointed out in the documentary, following their encounters with the boys (Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18 at the time) shortly after the crimes, she stated that “It seemed there must have been something amiss within the family for such events to have transpired.

She went on to say, “They don’t require money or any other reasons, nor are they seeking revenge – none of the possible motives we can imagine apply here.” Pausing, she added, “It’s clear that something unusual is going on within their family.

After the conclusion of their second trial in 1996 (their initial trial resulted in a deadlock), brothers Lyle and Erik were found guilty of two charges of first-degree murder and received sentences for life imprisonment.

In the last few months, the duo’s situation has received increased focus, not just from the Netflix documentary but also from Ryan Murphy’s television series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez.

Additionally, Lyle and Erik have received support from Kim Kardashian lately. She paid them a visit at their San Diego correctional facility in September, and in a published article, she expressed her belief that they are entitled to another trial.

In a recent piece, the Kardashian star stated, “I’ve had time with Lyle and Erik; they are not monstrous individuals. On the contrary, they are thoughtful, intelligent, and truthful gentlemen.

She noted, “I’m not convinced that serving a lifetime in prison was the appropriate penalty for such a complicated situation. Given current circumstances, if this crime had occurred and gone to trial recently, I think the results would have turned out quite differently.
