Hideo Kojima is one of the most celebrated video game creators of the past few decades. From his incredibly popular Metal Gear Solid series to his more recent work with Kojima Productions, he consistently delivers high-quality, successful games. Choosing his five best is difficult, but unsurprisingly, several Metal Gear Solid titles will make the list—it’s a consistently excellent series with very few weak entries. However, a few other standout games deserve recognition as well.
Here are the five best Hideo Kojima games.
5) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

A lot of fans might disagree, and even rank Metal Gear Solid higher, but I believe they’re overlooking just how polished the gameplay is in The Phantom Pain. While most Metal Gear Solid games have a learning curve, the developers often try to include so many stealth and combat possibilities that they run into the limitations of the controller’s buttons.
Despite an incomplete story and a disappointing ending, Metal Gear Solid V is a standout title in the series, finally delivering gameplay so engaging that players will want to keep returning just for the combat itself. It’s a Kojima game that truly shines when it comes to how it plays.
4) Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

The original Death Stranding wasn’t always easy to play. While carrying heavy loads across its large world felt awkward, that was intentional. Hideo Kojima and his team wanted to move away from relying on stealth and action, but they still needed to create challenges for players.
Building on a familiar foundation, On the Beach introduces a wealth of new possibilities. With thrilling action, a dynamic open world full of unexpected challenges, and some truly memorable storytelling, it stands as one of Hideo Kojima’s finest works.
3) P.T.

Though P.T. isn’t a complete game, its impact is undeniable. Even though Hideo Kojima and his team couldn’t fully develop their Silent Hill concept, this short, playable demo brilliantly showcased their talent for horror.
Whether or not the full game Silent Hills is ever released, P.T. remains an incredible experience. It’s not just the best game demo ever made, but one of the scariest games of all time. Although it’s short on story and length, it creates a truly unforgettable and terrifying atmosphere, particularly with its iconic hallway.
2) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Man, playing Sons of Liberty when it first came out was wild. I was totally thrown when I found out Solid Snake wasn’t the main character anymore – they switched to Raiden for all the sneaking around. A lot of gamers were furious at first, but honestly, if you stuck with it, you realized we were all overreacting. It actually worked out pretty well!
Raiden’s story features some of the most memorable villains in the series. The Dead Cell group provides fantastic boss battles, rivaling the iconic Foxhound squad from the original Metal Gear Solid. Sons of Liberty is a visually stunning game that almost reaches a new peak for the franchise. Sadly, there’s one more installment to consider.
1) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid 3 built upon the strengths of the original Metal Gear Solid games and improved them in almost every way. If you enjoyed stealth gameplay before, Snake Eater took it to the next level with a detailed camouflage system, letting you blend into the jungle environment. While equipping an alligator hat might seem strange, it’s surprisingly effective for sneaking past enemies in the swamp – a testament to how Hideo Kojima and his team masterfully balanced humor and practicality.
The game adds intense close-quarters combat and a challenging survival system, making jungle exploration more dangerous than ever before. It also features some of the series’ best boss battles and a truly gripping story. The complex narrative that reveals the origins of Big Boss and his connection to The Boss makes this a standout title from Hideo Kojima.
