Heretic Ending Explained (SPOILERS)

At the beginning of the movie, Mr. Reed asserts that during his comprehensive religious research, he stumbled upon the authentic faith. This assertion is challenged when Barnes and Paxton find themselves imprisoned in a cell with a self-proclaimed prophet of this genuine religion. In an attempt to demonstrate the power of his newly adopted belief, Reed slits Barnes’ throat as part of a ritual for resurrection.

Does Mr. Reed Have Supernatural Powers?

As I found myself left on my own, I realized that Mr. Reed wasn’t some enigmatic figure of a sinister new faith – he was merely a charlatan and a trickster. In our final confrontation, Barnes exposed his deceit: the way he manipulated two women, brainwashed and disheveled, to stage the charade of a ‘prophet’ eating a poison pie, only to ‘rise from the dead.’ It was all a sham, designed by Reed to cruelly illustrate that religion believers are foolish enough to embrace any congruent con, no matter how far-fetched or implausible. Since I, Sister Paxton, am smart enough to see through his trickery, Reed invites me on a journey through the ominous doors of his basement, promising to reveal the ‘one true religion.’

Through the basement doors adorned with eerie religious and occult trinkets, Sister Paxton ventures. As she passes through the final door, she steps into a storage room where numerous women are confined in cages, cruelly imprisoned by Reed – women whom he had starved, abused, and manipulated to believe they were his “prophets.

In the course of their shared night’s events, with all the queries and trials they encountered, Reed poses a closing question to Paxton in this storage room: What faith is universally authentic?

Paxton understands the purpose of the entire evening and Mr. Reed’s emotions: true power lies in control. In truth, Mr. Reed is merely a misogynist and a serial killer disguising himself as an intellectual, cruelly manipulating people’s beliefs for his own twisted pleasure.

Reed takes pleasure in the thought that he skillfully guided Sister Paxton throughout their evening, guiding her precisely to where he desired – be it as another one of his slaves or his newest victim. In his overconfidence, Reed sees Paxton as a compliant follower who never suspects the unexpected – like the ritual dagger she conceals, which Barnes had stolen from his collection of religious artifacts. However, in an abrupt turn of events, Paxton surprises him by stabbing Reed in the neck and fleeing the scene.

Does God Intervene?

In the end, Reed manages to find Paxton imprisoned in what resembles a prophet’s cell, and stabs her in the stomach. As she herself succumbs to her wounds, Reed struggles to reach Paxton, intending to deliver the final blow. Yet, even amidst all that has transpired, Paxton closes her eyes and starts to pray.

In a remarkable turn of events, Sister Barnes, who had been believed to be deceased following a vicious attack that left her with a slashed throat, miraculously regained some vitality to deliver a fatal blow to Reed. Afterwards, Barnes breathed her last in Paxton’s embrace. As the day broke after the heavy snowfall, Paxton stepped out of the labyrinthine house into the fresh morning light.

Was it God who stepped in to protect Sister Paxton, or is this left open to interpretation by the audience, potentially stirring up questions similar to those that once challenged one’s belief system, as Mr. Reed was known for doing?

Heretic is now playing in theaters.
