As a die-hard fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of Westeros, I find myself both hopeful and skeptical about the potential return of the Jon Snow sequel, SNOW. The rollercoaster journey of this spinoff’s development has been as unpredictable as a game of thrones itself!
The sequel to “Game of Thrones” titled “SNOW” has been halted for now, but it’s not definitively ruled out. During a press conference on Tuesday, HBO CEO Casey Bloys stated that the series with Kit Harington returning to The Wall is currently not being developed, following his announcement earlier this year. However, according to Deadline, Bloys hinted at a potential revisit by saying: “Perhaps we’ll give it another go.
As a dedicated Game of Thrones fan, I’ve always been on the lookout for any news about potential spinoffs from George R.R. Martin’s world-building masterpiece. In June 2022, a juicy tidbit dropped: rumors were swirling about a sequel series focusing on Jon Snow’s life in exile! What made this even more intriguing was the fact that Kit Harington, the man behind Jon Snow himself, was said to have originated the idea and spearheaded its development.
He explained to Screen Rant in April that they had put the project aside because none of them could find an engaging story that excited everyone enough. For now, he said, they have set the project aside, although there may be a time when they pick it up again. But for now, it’s not happening, it’s temporarily out of their active projects.
In a wide-ranging conversation with British GQ in August, Harington admitted that the idea for the “SNOW” spinoff was never truly his to begin with. He explained, “It was actually HBO who approached me with the suggestion. Initially, I declined. But then I started thinking about the possibility of exploring a compelling and significant storyline about a soldier after the war. I felt there might still be something meaningful to convey and a tale yet untold, in a rather restricted sense. Over the course of a couple of years, we exchanged ideas back and forth. However, it simply didn’t ignite our passion enough.
Eventually, I hesitated and expressed my concern, “If we continue to advance and refine it, we might wind up with a result that’s less than ideal.” He continued, emphasizing, “That’s certainly not something any of us desire.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been keeping tabs on Jon Snow’s story, and it seems like Kit Harington himself hasn’t closed the door on revisiting the project. Even George R.R. Martin’s right-hand man, Casey Bloys, echoed this sentiment recently. The boss at HBO shared that they’re brainstorming lots of ideas for the Game of Thrones universe, but they’re careful not to overdo it and flood the market. As he put it, “We don’t want to rush anything. There aren’t any green lights flashing for any other spinoffs yet. We’re taking our time with them, focusing on development, and only moving forward when we can truly serve something meaningful.
Despite the absence of snow, numerous Game of Thrones spinoffs are being developed, with two currently in production. Fans can return to Westeros as early as next year with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, followed by Season 3 of House of the Dragon in 2026. In the interim, George R.R. Martin’s books are accessible now in print, digital, and audio formats.
