2025 was a fantastic year for science fiction on TV. Fans eagerly awaited the return of Severance on Apple TV, and the streamer also delivered a new obsession with Murderbot. Syfy introduced the compelling adaptation Revival, and FX broadened the Alien universe with the popular show Alien: Earth. Even Adult Swim joined the fun with the animated series Common Side Effects. It was clear – sci-fi was thriving, and fans were loving it.
Even though science fiction has been doing well, the year’s biggest sci-fi hit, Pluribus, unexpectedly arrived on Apple TV in November. Its first season concluded right before Christmas, and the show quickly became a sensation. It received rave reviews, a nearly perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and became Apple TV’s most-watched show ever. With the finale airing just last week, fans are now eagerly awaiting Season 2 – but unfortunately, there’s some disappointing news. (Spoiler warning!)
Pluribus Season 2 Won’t Be Released for a Long Time
The sci-fi series Pluribus presents a fascinating idea: what if an alien virus connected almost everyone on Earth into a single, shared consciousness? The show centers on Carol Sturka (played by Rhea Seahorn, known from Better Call Saul), who is one of only thirteen people unaffected by the virus. Despite the seemingly friendly nature of those who are connected, Carol remains deeply suspicious of them.
Wow, the first season finale left me reeling! They revealed the Others were trying to absorb Sturka into their collective consciousness, and her response was… intense. She basically demanded an atomic bomb, and surprisingly, they had to give it to her. What an ending! But here’s the frustrating part: even though Apple greenlit the show for two seasons right away, we’re still going to have a long wait for Season 2. It’s a bit of a bummer after such a cliffhanger.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of Pluribus, admitted the second season will take a while to arrive, and some viewers might be disappointed. He explained that the production team works at a deliberate pace, comparing it to the slow movement of glaciers. Gilligan also shared that he’s aware of his own limited time and wants to accomplish more projects, but he’s simply not as fast as he used to be. He emphasized that significant time will pass between seasons, and there’s not much they can do to speed up the process.
As Gilligan mentioned, the first season of Pluribus faced delays due to the 2023 Writers Guild strike. Production didn’t begin until February 2024 and wrapped up in September. Filming took place in several locations, primarily Albuquerque, but also included Las Vegas, Spain, and the Canary Islands. Considering this production schedule and the fact that writing for Season 2 hasn’t finished, there could be a wait of two years – or even longer – for new episodes. While fans are accustomed to these delays, the silver lining is that it gives newcomers a chance to discover and enjoy the show.
