It’s striking that the most recently released Lord of the Rings games tend to receive the lowest review scores. Is the quality of LOTR gaming really declining? Or is there another explanation? Older Lord of the Rings games were typically role-playing games (RPGs), which suited the fantasy world well. Newer games, however, have tried different approaches, incorporating elements from popular genres like survival and life simulation games. Perhaps some of these negatively reviewed games aren’t as bad as people say. I decided to investigate Metacritic’s rankings of the lowest-rated Lord of the Rings games to see if their reputations are truly deserved.

The popular snowboarding game Cool Boarders is now available on Nintendo Switch 2! After a 20-year hiatus, the game—which was a classic on the original PlayStation—returns. Following its 1997 debut in the US, new Cool Boarders games were released almost every year, with Cool Boarders 4 arriving in 1999. Now, thanks to publisher Hamster and their new “Console Archives” series, the very first Cool Boarders is playable on Nintendo hardware for the first time ever.

The very first live-action Marvel movie, a 15-part series called Captain America, premiered in theaters on February 5, 1944. At the time, these kinds of serials were popular – short chapters shown before the main movie, with each episode ending on a suspenseful cliffhanger. This encouraged viewers to come back every week to find out what happened next. Dick Purcell played Captain America in the serial, making it the first time a Marvel character appeared in a professional movie. Despite being a significant financial undertaking for Republic Pictures, the movie didn’t follow the comic book story very closely. Without knowing the title, modern fans might not even recognize it as a Captain America adventure.

During today’s Nintendo Direct, Bandai Namco announced that Time Stranger is coming to Switch. Surprisingly, the Switch version will offer players a choice between two graphics modes: a ‘Quality’ mode at 30 frames per second and a smoother ‘Performance’ mode at 60 frames per second. This announcement left players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S a bit confused, as those versions don’t have this option.
