Marvel villains are famous for their elaborate and clever plans, which frequently test heroes and raise the dramatic tension of their stories. Unlike typical bad guys, Marvel villains’ schemes are grand in scope and highly creative. While these plots often demonstrate their intelligence and planning skills, some are admittedly a little over-the-top.

Sometimes, a villain’s scheme in a Marvel story feels so over-the-top that it’s hard to believe anyone would fall for it. But surprisingly, these plans often succeed. Whether it’s altering reality, destroying everything for a romantic reason, or simply proving their superiority, these villains demonstrate that unchecked ambition and pride can ultimately lead to their downfall.

5. Doctor Doom Steals the Power Cosmic

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Doctor Doom, but his scheme during Secret Wars just blows my mind. He somehow managed to steal the Power Cosmic from Galactus – Galactus! – and then used that to take the powers of the Beyonder. It’s insane to think about: Doom, a regular human, not only tricked a cosmic force of nature but actually manipulated the Beyonder, who’s basically one of the most powerful beings in existence. It’s a power grab for the ages, and a bit unbelievable even for comics!

Doom’s incredible intelligence and unwavering arrogance allowed him to succeed, even if only briefly. The fact that he actually became a god, however temporarily, makes this one of the most surprisingly successful—and ridiculous—schemes in all of Marvel Comics.

4. Magneto Redirects the Earth’s Magnetic Poles

Magneto’s scheme in X-Men #150 was incredibly ambitious and dangerous. He took control of Earth’s magnetic field and threatened to flip the planet’s poles. This wasn’t just about causing destruction; Magneto aimed to subdue humanity and prove mutant superiority. By showing he could disrupt the planet itself, he compelled world leaders to negotiate and acknowledge mutants as a major global force.

Magneto’s scheme would have devastated the planet – destroying the environment, wiping out technology, and likely causing widespread extinction, even for mutants. Despite the catastrophic consequences, he managed to sustain it long enough to demonstrate just how incredibly powerful he is, to the point that he can bend the laws of nature to his will. It’s a ridiculously extreme villainous act, but somehow, it works.

3. Loki Tricks Everyone with the ‘Kid Loki’ Gambit

Loki, the mischievous god, is famous for his elaborate plans, and his “Kid Loki” scheme from the comic Journey Into Mystery is particularly clever. After dying and being reborn as a child with no memories, Loki pretends to be innocent and selfless, earning the trust of heroes and gods. However, this is all a carefully crafted plot to defeat the fear god, Cul Borson, and escape his past as a notorious villain.

Loki cleverly used the illusion of his own death and return to control those around him. He tricked the entire Marvel Universe into thinking he’d become a better person, but it was all a calculated scheme to benefit himself. Despite his history of villainy, Loki managed to convince even the most distrustful heroes that he had changed, proving how brilliant his long-term plan was.

2. Thanos Destroys Half the Universe for… Love

Thanos is well-known for trying to collect the Infinity Stones and eliminate half of all life in the universe. The movies present this as a warped attempt to bring balance, but the comic book version is much sillier: he did it to win the affection of Mistress Death, who is literally the personification of death. Essentially, Thanos destroyed trillions of lives as a misguided attempt to impress a cosmic being who wasn’t even interested.

What’s so strange about Thanos is how extreme and focused his plan was. Villains usually want something for themselves, but Thanos’s motivation – a personal quest for love – led him to try and reshape the entire universe. It sounds crazy, but he actually pulled it off! He briefly became the most powerful being alive and got what he wanted. Of course, the Avengers eventually reversed his actions, but the fact that such a massive, universe-altering plan worked in the first place is both terrifying and darkly funny.

1. Green Goblin Takes Over S.H.I.E.L.D.

Norman Osborn, the villain known as the Green Goblin, is famous for his crazy plans, but his takeover during Dark Reign is arguably his most outlandish. After killing the Skrull Queen during the Secret Invasion, he was surprisingly celebrated as a hero and put in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. He immediately changed the organization’s name to H.A.M.M.E.R. and created his own team, the Dark Avengers – a group of villains pretending to be heroes – effectively taking control of the entire superhero community.

It’s almost unbelievable that this plan actually succeeded. Norman Osborn, famous for his villainous Green Goblin persona and causing chaos in New York City, managed to convince everyone he was a responsible leader capable of running a major intelligence agency. It’s comparable to putting a dangerous wildcard like the Joker in charge of the Justice League – a truly shocking turn of events.
