‘I’m Like WTF!’ I Didn’t See The Line Fans Shout At Adam Sandler Coming (And He Doesn’t Either)

It’s common for comedians to have famous lines yelled at them during public appearances – Will Ferrell often hears ‘meatloaf,’ and Jon Heder is constantly called ‘Tina, you fat lard.’ It seems much simpler to just shout a quote at a celebrity than to actually try and meet them, and it’s an easy way to get their attention. So, when Adam Sandler was asked about the line fans shout at him the most, it wasn’t surprising. However, the actual line they yell was a shock – it really caught me off guard!

Adam Sandler had a unique response when asked about phrases fans shout at him. While Dwayne Johnson often hears “you’re welcome” and Jeremy Allen White gets “yes, chef,” Sandler surprisingly revealed he frequently hears an insult his character, Happy Gilmore, receives in the movie. It’s not a compliment or famous line, but something fans actually yell at him a lot.

People often shout ‘Jackass’ at me, and it always throws me off because I’d forgotten that line was originally from the movie Happy Gilmore. My first thought is usually, ‘What’s going on?’

Growing up as a millennial during Adam Sandler’s prime, many of his movie lines are stuck in my head – even from his less-critically acclaimed films. I often find myself saying ‘Damn you, Scuba Steve’ whenever I make a silly mistake or hurt myself. And during tough tennis matches, I sometimes remember the line, ‘Water sucks.’ Those are just a couple of the many funny quotes from his movies that I still think about.

I don’t often think about the movie Jackass, even though I much prefer Happy Gilmore to films like Big Daddy and The Waterboy. It’s easy to imagine Adam Sandler going about his day and overhearing someone say ‘jackass,’ and being briefly bothered by it.

Interestingly, the famous line isn’t actually spoken by Adam Sandler in the movie Happy Gilmore. It’s shouted at him by a heckler – brilliantly played by the late Joe Flaherty – throughout the film, and even reappeared in Happy Gilmore 2 during Eminem’s memorable cameo. Sandler’s probably heard it a million times by now, but that doesn’t make it any less rude, to be honest.

To everyone enthusiastically shouting that one word at Adam Sandler, consider this: you’re not winning any prizes, and frankly, it’s a bit much. (I realize it’s not actually a line from his movies, but it feels appropriate given the situation.)
