Denzel Washington is widely considered one of Hollywood’s greatest actors. He’s known for powerful performances in films like Training Day, Philadelphia, The Equalizer series, and Fences, plus his acclaimed stage work – he even won a Tony Award for the stage production of Fences. Now, the movie he won his first Oscar for is available on Netflix, but there’s a slight catch for viewers.
Recently added to a streaming service, the 1989 film Glory is widely considered a classic Civil War movie. Starring Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andrew Braugher, it tells the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units to fight for the Union Army. The film focuses on the experiences of Captain Robert Gould Shaw (Broderick), who led the regiment. While not a huge commercial hit, Glory received widespread critical praise and earned five Academy Award nominations, including a Best Supporting Actor win for Washington’s portrayal of Private Trip.
Not All Netflix Users Will Have Access to Glory
Although the acclaimed film Glory is now on Netflix, viewers with ad-supported subscriptions may not be able to watch it right away. Netflix explains that licensing agreements prevent certain movies and shows – including Glory – from being available on its cheaper ad-supported plan. Currently, only subscribers to the Standard or Premium plans can access Glory and other recently added content.
If viewers choose to upgrade their subscription to watch the movie—or simply explore Glory—they’ll find it’s a critically acclaimed film. Today, Glory is unusual in that it has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences. Although it doesn’t perfectly reflect historical events, it powerfully portrays the important themes of the era and the story of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, and has since become a staple in many U.S. history classes.
