Ubisoft has unexpectedly canceled the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Originally announced in 2020 with a planned 2021 release, the project faced numerous delays and a complete overhaul. After years of development and a recent target release in early 2026, Ubisoft has decided to abandon the remake despite being close to completion.
Ubisoft announced a major company restructuring today, leading to the cancellation of six games, according to VGC. Four of these canceled projects haven’t been publicly named. One was intended for mobile platforms. The sixth was the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, which Ubisoft canceled because they’re now focusing more on ensuring high quality in their games.
So, I just read that Ubisoft spent the last couple of months really looking at what projects they have going on. Because of that, they’ve decided to change things up ā they’re going to focus on different games, move people and money to where they think it’ll make the biggest impact, and completely rework their plans for the next three years. Basically, they’re hitting the reset button on a lot of things, which is pretty big news!
The Sands of Time Remake Was Nearly Out
It would have been understandable for Ubisoft to cancel Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake at any time in the last five years, so the recent decision is unexpected. Rumors indicated the game might have been released suddenly in January, and Ubisoft confirmed it would be available by the end of March. This suggests the game was finished, making the cancellation even more surprising as a completed project was apparently abandoned.
The future of the Prince of Persia series is uncertain. While Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, released in 2024, received positive reviews, it didnāt perform well commercially for Ubisoft. The same appears to be true for The Rogue Prince of Persia, which launched in 2025. Itās currently unclear if Ubisoft will approve another Prince of Persia game.
