Back in April, HBO announced that they were renewing the show “The Last of Us” for a third season. However, HBO has been tight-lipped about when exactly this new season will be broadcasted. In an interview with Variety, Casey Bloys, the head of content at HBO and Max, mentioned that their goal is to have the third season of “The Last of Us” premiere in 2027.
Despite providing some information about the third season, Bloys remained vague when it came to a precise premiere date, merely confirming that the series is intended for 2027. Mazin is currently figuring out whether there will be two additional seasons or one longer one, and Bloys indicated he’s waiting on Mazin’s decision in this matter.
When queried regarding his feelings about Neil Druckmann departing as showrunner to concentrate on Naughty Dog’s “Intergalactic”, Bloys expressed pleasure over their past collaboration. Moreover, he mentioned that although Druckmann was engrossed in another endeavor, he had provided the team with a solid framework for the show to follow.
Bloys mentioned that it was wonderful to have Neil on board from the start. The main motivation for taking on ‘Last of Us’ came after ‘Chernobyl’, when he asked Craig what he wanted to work on next. Craig expressed interest in ‘Last of Us’, and that creative enthusiasm was crucial to me. It was terrific to have Neil as part of the project.
Many individuals might not be aware that Neil is employed full-time in game development at Naughty Dog and creating video games. This position demands a significant amount of his time and effort, which explains why he must prioritize it. However, I think the show’s blueprint that he provided us with is solid, and given Craig’s expertise, I am confident we’ll be in capable hands. Frankly, my concerns are minimal.
The final episode of “The Last of Us” season 2 aired a few months back. In contrast to the widespread praise and high viewership that the first season enjoyed, the second season seemed to have missed its mark. As per a report published in May, the number of viewers for the second season finale was only about half of those who tuned in for the first season’s finale. To put it numerically, the finale attracted approximately 3.7 million viewers across all platforms, while the first season finale had an audience of 8.2 million viewers.
Initially, when the second season debuted, it attracted more audiences than its earlier versions. A report from April revealed that over 5.3 million viewers watched the U.S. premiere of The Last of Us on all platforms. This figure represents an approximately 10% growth compared to the viewership of season 1’s premiere, which stood at 4.7 million viewers.
The initial season of “The Last of Us” saw a significant increase in viewership during the week before the second season’s debut, rising approximately 150%.
