Lindsey Vonn Details Olympics Injury, Reveals Reason Behind Crash

Lindsey Vonnis speaking out following a harrowing experience at the 2026 Olympics.

Following her crash in the women’s downhill final at the Milano Cortina Winter Games – which led to her being airlifted off the mountain – the skier revealed more information about her injury.

Lindsey announced on Instagram on February 9th that she suffered a serious tibia fracture – a break where the bone shattered into several pieces. While the fracture is currently stable, she’ll need multiple surgeries to fully heal.

Despite competing with a torn ACL – an injury she sustained just a week before the Winter Games – three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey explained that her crash wasn’t caused by her knee injury at all.

I was slightly off balance – just five inches too close to the edge – and my right arm got caught on the gate, which caused me to fall. My previous knee injury didn’t contribute to the crash at all, it was purely a positioning error.”

Although Lindsey didn’t achieve her hoped-for result at the Winter Games after coming out of retirement, she’s happy she pursued her Olympic dream anyway.

Even though yesterday didn’t go as planned and was physically tough, I don’t regret a thing,” she said. “Being at the starting line yesterday was amazing, and I’ll never forget it. Just having the chance to compete felt like a win.”

Lindsey admitted that racing involves inherent risks, and downhill skiing will always be a very dangerous sport.

She explained that life, like ski racing, involves taking chances. We all have hopes and dreams, fall in love, and pursue what we want. Sometimes things don’t go as planned – we might experience heartbreak or not reach our full potential. But that’s also what makes life beautiful: we have the opportunity to try.

Looking back on her successful career – highlighted by a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, two world championship medals, and four World Cup titles in skiing – Lindsey Vonn took a moment to thank and inspire her fans.

She encouraged everyone to be brave and pursue their dreams, writing that life is too short to be afraid of taking risks. She believes the only true failure is not even trying.

Lindsey concluded, “I believe in you, just as you believed in me.”

Indeed, many of Lindsey’s supporters are rooting for her amid her recovery.

Reese Witherspoon commented, praising the person for their bravery and willingness to push boundaries. She called them a ‘true Champion’ and said she’s always been inspired by them.

Natalie Portman sent well wishes, writing, “Beautiful inspiration. Sending healing energy and hoping for a smooth recovery.”

Olympian Ilona Maher praised the individual, saying, “I admire your courage. You prove that women are capable of anything, regardless of age or what others think.”
